Nowadays, exploring maps is closely linked to
browsers, new technology, and Google Maps, a kind
of magic modern window through which we can
discover the world. But, have you ever thought
about the maps that were hundreds and thousands
of years before leading to mysterious places?
3
Harry Coumnas, a famous archeologist has recently
found a 100 million year-old map. According to
the experts, the map is a staggering 100 million
years old depicting the mountains and includes a
series of civil engineering projects and around
12,000 kilometers of dams, channels and
hieroglyphs of an unknown origin.
4
Since its discovery, the map has stirred both
intrigue and controversy, mostly due to the
presence of what appears to be a representation
of Egypt 300 years before it was discovered.
Another fact is if not even more intriguing
facet of the appearance of Egypt is that it
appears to show the land mass before it was
covered with sand and stones, over 6000 years ago.
5
The great debated was sparked by Harry Coumnas
when he decoded the ways which the most famous
archeologists failed to. He and a team of
archeologists studied the map and found many
anomalies, such as the use of mercatorial
projection and the inclusion of a pre-sand Egypt.
6
The Egyptians were able to create cylindrical
maps based on their knowledge of a spherical
earth, though mercatorial projection was not used
by Europeans until later in the 16th century, and
were also able to use astronomy and geometry to
calculate latitude and longitude, though absolute
accuracy was not possible until the invention of
the chronometer in 1760.
7
While these two feats amazing as they are
could be explained by use of Greek source maps
charts from the age of Alexander, nothing could
explain inclusion of Egyptian. As a result,
Harry Coumnas proposed that the map was based on
materials that pre-date 4000 BCE, before any
known developed languages or progressive
civilizations.
8
This theory implies that a prehistoric
civilization had the technology to navigate major
seaways fairly accurately chart the globe. He
also suggested the topographic depiction of the
interior of the continents required aerial
capabilities, implying the prehistoric super
civilization to be both nautical and aerial
masters leading to the further speculation of
either an Atlantean or alien civilization.
9
This map opens up the debate over how we view
our own history and what, if any, of those views
are accurate. Perhaps someday the truth will be
discovered Harry Coumas added.
