When you discover that you have a clogged toilet,
your first instinct might be to call local
plumbers, but this is not necessarily the first
thing you should do. In most cases, the task
could be something that the average
do-it-yourselfer can usually tackle. However, if
you do try to fix a clogged toilet on your own,
make sure you know what needs to be done and you
do it correctly. One of the simplest ways to try
to fix a clogged toilet is using a plunger. Most
local plumbers will tell you to use a plunger
that has a fold out cup, as these work best on a
toilet's uniquely shaped opening.
3
The first step in using a plunger to clear a
clogged toilet is to pump it back and forth into
the toilet. You need to create a solid seal, so
you must use equal force as you go both
directions. After pumping the plunger several
times, flush the toilet. Sometimes you will need
to repeat this process once, but if it will not
flush properly after plunging twice, there is a
bigger problem and you will need to try a toilet
auger. A toilet auger is a tool used to clean the
trap in the clogged toilet. It looks like a cable
and a J-shaped tube. They are not much different
than the drain snake that you might use on your
sink, but they are designed for the different
shape and size of the toilet. Purchase one at
your local hardware store when you are dealing
with a clogged toilet.
4
To begin, pull out the handle completely so that
the cable's tip is the only thing peeking out at
the bottom. Then, slide the auger's end into the
opening of the toilet. Crank the handle clockwise
while pushing forward slowly. Soon you will feel
it bottom out when this happens, pull the unit
out and repeat the process. When you do, force it
to the left. Then, repeat again, forcing it to
the right. You can do this three or four times
it should clear the trap and make your toilet
flush properly again.
5
Sometimes, using an auger or plunging does not
fix the problem. If you are faced with a
particularly stubborn issue, it is probably time
to call local plumbers. You simply cannot see
inside the pipes and inner workings of the
toilet. It is always best to work with a
professional for stubborn clogs. When looking for
local plumbers, rest assured that unclogging
toilets is a fairly common task. Most local
plumbers you might be considering are probably
sufficiently skilled. When it comes to a clogged
toilet, especially if it is the only one in your
home, you simply cannot afford to wait a few days
for it to be serviced.
