Vital Facts About Varicose and Spider Veins
2
What are spider veins and varicose
veins? Varicose veins are blue, red, or
flesh-colored enlarged or swollen veins, often
raised above the surface of the skin. Such veins
usually appear twisted and bulging on the thighs
and back of the calves. Varicose veins also found
around the vagina and buttocks of pregnant
women. On the other hand, spider veins look
similar to varicose veins, but they are
smaller. They are found closer to the surface of
the skin than varicose veins and are usually red
or blue in color.
Spider veins, as the name suggests, appear like
tree branches or spider-webs created with short
and jagged lines. Varicose veins are caused due
to weak or damaged valves in the veins. The
valves are supposed to pump blood up to the
heart, and if they get damaged or weakened, the
blood leaks back into the veins and pools there.
Due to the backed-up blood, veins turn bigger and
varicose.

Spider veins are caused due to the backup of
blood, hormonal imbalance, injuries, and exposure
to the sun. Common causes Increasing age As
you age older, the valves of your veins become
weaker and may not work in a proper
manner. Hormonal changes Hormonal changes
during puberty, pregnancy and menopause raise the
risk of varicose or spider veins. Further,
consumption of birth control pills and drugs
containing estrogen and progesterone may affect
the veins.
Pregnancy There is significant increase in the
amount of blood in the body during pregnancy,
thereby causing veins to widen. The growing
uterus adds pressure on the veins, too. This
condition may cause varicose and spider
veins. Obesity Extra pounds put immense
pressure on your veins, causing veins to become
varicose. Lack of movement Sitting or standing
for a long time compels veins to work harder to
pump blood to your heart.

Treatment options Lifestyle changes and medical
treatments are introduced to treat and relieve
symptoms, prevent complications and improve
appearance of the veins. If symptoms are severe
enough, then medical treatments are recommended,
including 1- Sclerotherapy 2- Surface laser
treatments 3- Endovenous techniques
(radiofrequency and laser) 4- Surgery including
Surgical Ligation and Stripping, PIN stripping,
and 5- Ambulatory 6- Phlebectomy Consult a
physician specialized in vein treatment in
Marietta to gain insight into each of the
treatment options provided above.
