Introduction to the CAD/CAM
  • Computer-aided design (CAD) involves creating
    object models defined by geometrical parameters,
    using a computer system.
  • Computer-aided manufacturing (CAM) involves the
    use of software to control manufacturing tools
    and machinery.

Advantages of using CAD/CAM
  • There are several benefits of using CAD systems
    over traditional drafting methods that use
    rulers, squares, compasses, etc. Computer models
    designed using CAD are three dimensional and can
    be rotated on any axis, enabling the designer
    properly analyze the model as it was a real
    object. The use of CAD/CAM software also reduces
    the time required for production planning and
    allocation of jobs to various resources.

  • Computer-integrated manufacturing (CIM) combines
    both computer-aided design (CAD) and
    computer-aided manufacturing (CAM) and provides a
    completely automated and error-free manufacturing
    process. The CIM approach increases the speed of
    the manufacturing process and is widely used in
    the automotive, aviation, and ship building
    industries.
