Understanding An Autistic Child
2
  • Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is characterized
by a repetitive and characteristic pattern of
behavior that impairs normal or social
activities. In other words, an autistic child is
not able to interact well with other people. In
comparison, boys are most likely to be affected
than girls. The child is unable to focus on many
things at the same time, shy and may not play
with other children or parents like normal
    children would.

3
Causes
  • Even though scientists have not yet established
the real causes of autism, it is believed that
genetic factors and environment tend to play a
huge role. People living with autism are likely
to possess sensory interest such as noticing the
smell of a substance or looking at a moving
    object.

4
  • They tend to avoid anything that will trigger
their senses such as sounds emanating from vacuum
cleaners and the likes. Also, this will affect
their performances in school since they are slow
    learners.

5
Diagnosis
  • It is important to introduce primary diagnosis so
that the parent can understand what the child is
going through. It involves a multidisciplinary
team that includes a pediatrician, psychiatrist,
and a language therapist. These professionals can
interact with the child by allowing them to
engage in activities so that they can learn their
    weaknesses.

Importance of diagnosis
  • By detecting the disorder in good time, the
parent can understand what the child is going
through. This is also beneficial since other
people can also recognize and relate better with
the affected child. Also, the parents and
guardians can seek the necessary services and
support systems to help the child lead a normal
    life.

8
Treatment and Interventions
  • There is no cure for this disorder. People that
are affected just need to be understood through
various ways. However, people can contribute by
    making the following contributions

9
  • Providing and spreading the knowledge based on
their understanding of autism. Most people may
not be in a position to understand that this
condition exists. They need to be reminded that
these children are not cursed but are going
through challenging times in their lives.
Numerous campaigns have been set up to enlighten
parents and teachers so that they can learn how
    to treat these children differently.

  • Donations. Underprivileged families may not be
able to afford diagnostic services or to put up
their children in special schools. By making some
donations, they can afford to take them to
schools which understand the children better so
that they can improve their learning and social
    activities.

12
  • Voluntary activities. Now that you have gone
through the necessary training on the subject,
you can organize to participate in managing the
problem by volunteering in schools and special
forums. This is the best way to give back to the
society since few people are willing to
    participate in it.

13
  • Organizing for fundraising. There are few
organizations that have been founded to support
the course. Therefore, some individuals can join
hands and seek funds to educate, organize events
and to enlighten people on the subject.
