When is Emergency Dental Care Necessary?
2
  • Its impossible to predict when emergency dental
care will be needed. Most patients who seek
emergency dentist appointments do so because of
trauma theyve incurred to their mouth during a
    car or sports accident.

3
  • If you ever find yourself in a situation where
youre faced with the decision to seek immediate
help or wait-out your pain until normal business
hours, it will be necessary for you to
differentiate between an emergency and an
accident before calling our dentists in Newport
News, VA. Lets take a look at some of the
reasons you would need to schedule an emergency
    dentist appointment.

4
Tooth Trauma
  • Knocked out teeth If a tooth has been knocked
out after regular business hours, reach out to
your local dentist on call and ask whether they
think an emergency appointment is needed. If the
missing tooth can be found, try to recover it and
return it to your dentist so that it can be
reattached. On your way to the office, hold the
tooth by the crown instead of the root this will
increase the tooths ability to be reattached.

  • Severely shifted teeth If a tooth has been
knocked out of position in an accident but is
still in your mouth, do not attempt to force it
back into place. Instead, reach out to your
    dental professional to request further
instructions. Teeth that have shifted severely
can be fixed, however the situation may not call
    for a dental emergency.

7
  • Fractured teeth If youve fractured a tooth in
an accident, youll have to visit your dentist to
determine the extent of the damage and how to
correct it. Tooth fractures are rarely considered
an emergency unless there has also been damage to
    the mouths soft tissue.

  • Until you get to your appointment, we suggest
rinsing your mouth out with water to remove blood
and dirt that may have been trapped in your mouth
during the accident. Depending on your pain
levels, Ibuprofen (not Advil) may be necessary to
relieve pain. If you are experiencing swelling,
use cold compresses to keep it down.

10
Soft Tissue Damage
  • Has your gum tissue been punctured or damaged? If
so, contact your dentist immediately! Your gums
act as the glue that keep your teeth in place,
and damaged tissue can severely affect your
    mouths ability to heal.

11
  • Injuries that are bleeding severely may require
stitches if you are losing lots of blood, or can
tell your mouth will need stitches, we suggest
you visit the emergency room first before
    requesting a dentist appointment.

Severe Toothaches and Infections
  • Sometimes, cavities and other infections can
escape our notice until its too late. When
conditions like periodontal disease or root
infections become severe, they can cause severe
migrates and lack of appetite among other
    conditions. If youre experiencing side-effects
of a toothache or infection, contact an on-call
    dentist to seek professional advice.

14
  • Using the information above, you can tell if an
emergency dentist appointment will be necessary
after an accident. Unfortunately, all dental
injuries are unique and some may not fall into
    the categories weve explained here.

15
  • If youre not sure your condition requires
emergency dental care, we welcome you to contact
one of our dentists in Newport News, VA during
normal business hours. If this is a dental
emergency, reach out to our on-call specialist at
    757-345-1202 for after-hours inquires.
