3HIV Basics and Reasons of getting HIV Infection
HIV stands for Human Immunodeficiency Virus. It
affects the immune system of the body by
destroying the cells that fight diseases and
infections. Unlike other viruses, HIV is not
curable. However, it can be controlled with
proper treatment and care and if we are not
careful, it eventually leads to a condition
called AIDS, the Acquired Immune Deficiency
Syndrome.

5There are special cells, called CD4 Cells or T
Cells in our body that fight diseases and
infections. HIV virus specifically attacks these
cells. Over time, it reduces the number of CD4
cells in the body to such an extent that the
infected person becomes incapable of fighting
infections and diseases. Any infection or cancer
to such a person will have fatal consequences
only. Such a condition signals that the person
has AIDS

8HIV spreads from an infected person to another
only through direct contact of bodily fluids like
blood (including menstrual), semen, vaginal
secretions, and breast milk. The most common ways
with which the HIV virus spreads are blood
transfusion from an infected person or use of
infected needles, syringes or other injecting
equipment. Some babies contract HIV virus from
mother either during birth or through
breastfeeding.

12Unprotected sex is another high risk activity for
spreading the HIV virus. During sexual
intercourse, HIV virus can enter through cuts,
sores, and membranes on penis, vagina or anus.
Oral sex can also cause HIV transmission though
it is considered a low risk practice.
