Local area network (LAN)

• It is a type of network which is usually owned
  privately and linked devices in a single
  building, Office or campus. LAN can be simple as
  two PCs and a printer in home, office
• The size of LAN is limited to some kilometers
• LAN is designed to allow resources to be shared
  between personal computers or workstation. The
  resources can include hardware, data and software
  for example to one computer a large hard disk
  drive is allocated to it and become a server to
  different clients. The different resources are
  stored on this server and used as needed by the
  whole group.

WIDE AREA NETWORK

• It is the type of network which provides a long
  distance transmission of data, image, audio and
  video information over large geographical area
  that may comprise a continent, country or even
  the whole world
• WAN is normally a line leased from a telephone
  that connects a home computer or LAN to an
  internet service provider.

Metropolitan area network

• This type of network which size is between LAN
  and a WAN. It normally covers the area inside the
  city or a town.
• It is designed for customers who need high speed
  connectivity, normally to the internet and have
  endpoints spread over a city or some different
  part of city.
• The good example of MAN is the part of the
  telephone company network that provides a high
  speed DSL line to the customer.
