5 Logo Creation Mistakes to Avoid
  • Great logos look deceptively simple. Coming up
with one takes up a lot of effort, but can also
be very fun. Whether youre working on your next
big idea, want to add that extra bling to your
freelancing business or are a professional
designer, some common logo creation mistakes can
sneak up on you. Thats why theyre so common. To
make sure you dont make them, check your
creation against our list of the top five errors
to avoid when designing a logo

3
Avoid these
4
1) Too many colors
  • More than four different colors tend to get too
confusing. Moreover, going for too many colors
might mean that they harmonize poorly. Try to go
for a maximum of three or four that are easily
distinguishable and dont clash. Another very
important reason for not overdoing colors -
sooner or later you are going to see your logo in
black and white. And you want it to be as strong
and meaningful as it is in color.

5
2) Bad font choice
  • Avoid Comic Sans like the plague. The quirky font
has been so overused that it has become the
source of Internet memes. Using multiple fonts is
usually a bad idea, too. You want your logo to be
simple and understandable at first glance a lot
of fonts go against both those principles.
Consequentially, they fail to convey their
message or have any impact on the people looking
    at it.

6
3) Overcomplicating
  • Simple and understandable are two keywords that
deserve their own place in the list. Going crazy
with effects or having multiple different
elements that dont work with each other is a
no-go. A logo should be easy to remember,
    understand and reciprocate.
  • Disclaimer Too much abstract simplicity can hurt
a logo, too. There are a lot of logos of a single
letter in a circle (Pinterest, Skype, WordPress)
dont let yours be just another one of those.

7
4) Not considering various media devices
  • Youve made a logo that looks great in your
software of choice. Thats great, but youre not
done yet. How will it look in a newspaper,
letter, business card or even a t-shirt? How does
it look on a smartphone, tablet or a huge screen?
A good logo looks great on all kinds of media,
even without its colors. It is extremely
important to test it out or at least try to
imagine it on as many options as you want.
Sometimes it is a good idea to have a couple of
    versions for the different occasions.

8
5) Imitating or using stock photos
  • Imitation wont lead to anything good. The main
purpose of a logo is to be original and
immediately associated with the brand behind it.
Taking the hype train on a current fad wont help
achieve that. And neither will stock photos
chances are, someone already used them.
  • One last thing you should never, ever forget
regarding logos taste is subjective. Every
great logo out there will have someone saying
that its too bland or too complicated. And
thats not a bad thing. Just keep it in mind when
asking people for an opinion on a logo that
youve created. And if youre doing it for a
customer offer them a couple of slight variations
even if youre sure which one is best.
