Bladder cancer is caused due to the growth of
abnormal bladder cells and division of them
beyond their usual boundaries. Commonly, these
cells grow on the inner layer of the bladder and
in some cases this growth can expand into the
deeper bladder layers, making it difficult to
treat. Here is a list of few facts about bladder
cancer.

  • Bladder cancer is three times more common in men
than in women. Though it is more prevalent in
men, studies have shown that women are more
likely to present advanced tumors and have a
worse prognosis than men at almost every stage of
    the disease.
  • The 5-year survival rate for women is equal to
the 10-year survival rate for men.

  • Cigarette smoking is the most significant risk
factor, with smokers three to four times more
likely to get the disease than nonsmokers.
  • The most common symptom of bladder cancer is
    bleeding in the urine (hematuria).
  • Radical cystectomy provides the best chances of
cure in patients with muscle invasive disease.

  • Bladder cancer has a recurrence rate of 50-80
percent and because it requires life-long
surveillance, it is the most expensive cancer to
treat on a per patient basis.
  • It is estimated that 3.98 billion is spent to
treat bladder cancer each year in the U.S.

  • People who work with certain chemicals or in
certain industries are at higher risk for
    developing bladder cancer. Industry examples
include dye, ether, paint, printing, and rubber.
  • Individuals with exposure to high levels of
arsenic in their drinking water are also at a
greater risk, as are those exposed to the chemo
    drug cyclophosphamide.
