  • A new workout routine starts out as exciting, but
before you know it, youre making up endless
excuses for why you cant make it to the gym.
Burnout happens for a variety of reasons and can
show itself through decreased performance and
motivation. However, it is possible to combat
    burnout using the following suggestions.

3
  • Remember that a key component of success is
moderation. Its easy to do workouts that are too
frequent or too intense when you are excited to
see results, but in general, you should start at
a comfortable level and build up. The increase in
frequency and intensity should be gradual in
accordance with your changing fitness level.

4
  • Change your routine by
  • Using different equipment
  • Getting a new partner
  • Trying new classes
  • Working out outside or in a specialized gym
  • Updating your music mix
  • Even just changing the order of your routine can
be beneficial. The change will stimulate your
mind and challenge your muscles in different ways.

5
  • Balance high intensity workouts with low
    intensity and stress-reducing activities like
yoga. Exercising excessively or at high
intensities can overwhelm your body and you may
grow to dread your workout. Youll look forward
to the variation in intensity and your body and
mind will adapt to different exercises.

6
  • Enjoy your workouts by making sure to integrate
    fun activities. Periodically exchange
conventional gym sessions for fun, alternative
workouts. If you bring friends and make it a
social activity, it will seem like less of a
    workout.

7
  • Listen to what your body is telling you. Your
workout should adjust accordingly, because there
is a difference between pushing yourself through
moderate fatigue and pushing yourself toward
injury. Your body needs a break and taking time
off from exercise is important for recovery.

8
  • Set realistic goals that you can keep. Big goals
are a great motivator, but it's hard to maintain
the momentum. You'll find greater success
sticking with your regular exercise routine if
you set little goals and see them as necessary
    steps toward your big goal.

9
  • Think about your reasons for starting an exercise
routine. It may be a newfound interest in a
healthy lifestyle, an upcoming vacation or
special event, or any number of other reasons.
Remembering your motivation is powerful and
provides what's necessary to take the steps
toward staying on course. Within that line of
thinking, consider keeping a journal to document
    your progress and milestones reached.
