  • Rabindranath Tagore 7 May 1861 7 August 1941)
    was a Bengali poet of India. He was also a
    philosopher and an artist. He wrote many stories,
    novels and dramas, as well as composing music and
    many songs.

BIOGRAPHY
  • Rabindranath Tagore was Asias first Nobel Prize
    winner. He was awarded the Nobel Prize for
    literature in 1913 for his book Gitanjali.
    Although most famed for his poetry, Tagore was a
    creative genius who played a crucial role in the
    cultural renaissance of India and Bengal in the
    19th and early 20th Century. As well as being a
    Seer poet Tagores achievements included notable
    contributions in the fields of music, literature,
    plays, art and education reformer.

  • His writings greatly influenced Bengali culture
    during the late 19th century and early 20th
    century. In 1913, he won the Nobel Prize in
    Literature, the first Asian to win this prize. He
    was popularly known as Gurudev.

Freedom fighter and patriot
  • He participated in the Indian nationalist
    movement, though in his own non-sentimental and
    visionary way and Gandhi, the political father
    of modern India, was his devoted friend. Tagore
    was knighted by the ruling British Government in
    1915, but within a few years he resigned the
    honour as a protest against British policies in
    India.
