The Buzz About Solar Renewable Energy
  • Just today there was a discussion about renewable
energy. The consensus was that there should be a
move away from carbon extraction such as coal and
oil. Gas should be mined instead and of course a
solar panel installation Cumbria harnesses the
power of the sun to make electricity.
  • Much has been talked about fracking and,
especially in Cumbria, companies want to start
extracting shale gas from the rocks below the
beautiful landscape. The recovery of shale gas
has been very successful in the United States.

  • However, that country has vast open spaces and
the extraction can be done well away from towns
and cities. In the United Kingdom this is not
the case and understandably there has been some
    opposition from the public.
  • The worry is that it could cause minor
earthquakes because the rocks will be blasted
apart to release the gas. The discussion then
moved to the use of wind power and solar energy
as a means of powering homes and businesses with
a form of energy that is totally natural and free
    of harmful carbon emissions.
  • These gases deplete the ozone layer and
especially the United Kingdom is keen to reduce
these harmful substances by 80 by 2050. Germany
has already done much in this direction through
solar power and since their climate is similar to
ours, there is no reason why we could not do the
    same in our country.

  • You may think that we do not get enough sun in
Cumbria for the solar panels to be effective. PV
panels are capable of converting daylight into
energy too and although it is preferable to have
the sun shining, they still produce a fair amount
    of energy on overcast days.
  • If you should go ahead and have solar panels
fitted in order to save on your utility bills,
you should make sure that you choose the photo
voltaic ones mentioned above. They are currently
the only units that are eligible for the Feed In
tariff scheme that the Government has introduced.
  • Joining this scheme means that you are able to
use the energy and get paid for it, but it also
means that you can sell your surplus to the
National Grid. This allows you to generate extra
income over and above the money saved on
    electricity.

  • You will have to fulfil some criteria in order to
be taken on under this scheme. Your home needs
to meet a certain level of energy efficiency.
You can find the details on the internet, but if
not you could ask your panel supplier about all
the requirements that need to be fulfilled.
  • You need to make sure that you find an installer
that is a member of the MCS scheme.
  • If you live in an area of outstanding beauty in
Cumbria, you may want to find out from your local
Council what the restrictions are on the fitting
    of panels on roofs.
