At Health and Fertility centre for Women,
infertile women get effective surgical and
non-surgical infertility treatments that help
them to conceive and give birth to a healthy
child. In Singapore, there are many women
healthcare centres which offer a comprehensive
range of healthcare services including
infertility treatments, care and checkups during
pregnancy and healthcare services for newborns.
Moreover, this centre offers cervical cancer
screening and many other crucial healthcare
services.
3
What is infertility?
Infertility, in case of women, can be defined as
the inability to conceive or carry a child for
the full term of pregnancy after one year of
having sexual intercourse. Fertility potential
decreases with growing age. The probability of
conception falls to 97 per cent in women who are
in their early twenties and to 65 in their late
thirties and this probability decreases with
every passing year. This is why women are advised
to start family planning before turning thirty
and if they are facing any difficulties in
conceiving, they must consult a doctor. Besides
female infertililty issues, the number of males
suffering from infertility is also rising year on
year.
4
What are the psychological impacts of infertility?
Infertility has many profound psychological
effects, such as anxiety which in turn increases
sexual dysfunctioning and creates marital
discord. These give rise to emotional stress and
marital conflicts. No matter who - the man or his
wife- is suffering from infertility, this
disorder takes a toll on health, emotional
bonding and marital lifestyle.
5
What are the causes of infertility?
  • There are many causes of infertility. Below are a
    few causes of infertility.
  • Causes of infertility in males
  • Low sperm count
  • Poor motility of sperms
  • Poor morphology or shape of the sperm, due to
which a sperm cannot penetrate an egg

6
  • Causes of infertility in females
  • Hormonal disorders in females results in the
failure of the growth and release of the egg
    follicles.
  • The blockage of the fallopian tube prevents the
meeting of the sperm and egg.
  • Invading of the tissues lining the womb and
damage of the neighboring reproductive tissues.
  • Combined cause of infertility In this case,
both males and females may be infertile or
sub-fertile which is another cause of a couples
    infertility.

7
How can infertility be cured?
An expert gynaecologist chooses a treatment
method to cure infertility depending upon the
causes of this disorder. Treatment methods of
infertility may be categorized as medical or
complementary and alternative treatments. Medical
treatment of infertility involves the use of
fertility medications, medical devices,
surgeries, or a combination of medicines and
surgeries. If conventional medical treatments
fail to achieve a full term pregnancy, the
physician or gynaecologist may suggest a patient
to undergo an In Vitro Fertilization (IVF). IVF
and related techniques such as Zygote
Intrafallopian Transfer (ZIFT), Gamete
Intrafallopian Transfer (GIFT) and
Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI) are
called Assisted Reproductive Technology (ART)
techniques which can also be used to cure
infertility in women.
