A family dentist is responsible for the
assessment, diagnosis, treatment and prevention
of oral health problems present in each family
member assigned to his/ her care.

Sometimes, family dentists are also referred to
as general dentist because they cater to the
dental needs of people from different age groups.

Moreover, family dentists or general dentists
offer primary services such as dental
examinations, dental extractions, professional
teeth cleanings, dental fillings and simple root
canals. For their young patients, they do
fluoride treatments and dental sealants.

There are a lot of family dentist out there to
choose from. It is the responsibility of patients
to correctly asses which family dentist can
provide the dental needs his/her family seeks.
Here are some of the basic criteria you should
consider on what to look for in a family dentist

1. First and foremost, it is important that
your dentist had passed the National Board Dental
Examinations (NBDE) and acquire his/her
professional license. This license should be up
to date and on the country where he/she
practices.

2. The dentist should be a current member of a
professional dental association such as the
American Dental Association. If your family
dentist also specializes in a different dental
field like cosmetic dentistry, it is a must that
he/she is a member of American Academy of
Cosmetic Dentistry.

3. Your dentist should be committed to
continuing education to become updated to the
different advancements in the dental technology.
Look for certifications of the different
trainings he/she had attended to better his/her
profession.

4. It is important that your family dentist is
well experienced in dealing with different oral
health problems from different age groups. You
should look for a family dentist that does not
only communicate well to adult patients but to
young patients as well.
