Guide By Indian Exporters For Stainless Steel
Fitting
Passivation refers to a material becoming less
reactive under environmental conditions such as
moisture. Suppliers and exporters of S.S.
fittings in India consider Passivation as an
important step for maximizing the corrosion
resistance feature of S.S fittings. The term
Passivation is often misunderstood by people.
This process is not about removing any paint or
coating, it is rather a post-production process
of maximizing the corrosion resistance of the S.S
material (stainless steel) that is used for
producing several components.
2
No manufacturing company or exporter of S.S
fittings in India possesses universal agreement
for carrying out passivation. The stainless steel
has a protective oxide film layer on the surface
(it is produced before fabrication of passive
stainless steel). This is invisible to human eye
as it is extremely thin (100,000 times thinner
than our hair).
S.S. fittings and components have unique tendency
to produce this layer naturally when they came in
contact with oxygen or air. This protective layer
cover the clean, newly machined, polished
stainless steel fitting from all sides. Indian
exporters keep S.S. fittings away from dirty
environment as any contaminating substance
present in air can ruin or damage this protective
layer and thus, it will affect the corrosion
resistance.

What to do and what not to do under Passivation
of S.S. fittings
Professional and experienced exporters of S.S.
fittings in India keep the components safe by
following steps
4
  • Cleaning the components and removing all dirt
    particles before passivation
  • Avoiding chlorides which can harm the surface
  • Using Tap water is recommended
  • Replacing baths time by time and maintaining them
    at appropriate temperature
  • Using control sample to check the effectiveness
    of bath
  • Particular machine should be used for
    manufacturing S.S fittings only
  • Dont passivate nitrided or carburized S.S
    fittings
  • Dont use iron content tooling
  • Dont avoid the concentration of nitric acid in
    the bath
  • Dont carry out passivation for more than one S.S
    fitting at a time
