Title: Ilan Toledano - Using Immersion Heaters in the Food Industry

1
Using Immersion Heaters in the Food Industry
2
What is an Immersion Heater?
Industrial immersion heaters by WATTCO are a
powerful and effective way to heat up liquids
during the manufacturing process. For those in
the food industry, the electric immersion heater
can be used to store hot water, oils, and other
fluids, as well as pre-heating processing
equipment. In the next few pages, learn more
about this indispensable piece equipment and
factors to be aware of when purchasing your own.

3
Uses in the Food Industry
  • Immersion heaters are often used by the food
    industry in the following applications
  • Heating cooking oil
  • Preventing liquid and gaseous solution from
    freezing
  • Heat flow systems
  • Ringing and cleaning systems
  • Pre-heating boiler equipment

4
Types of Immersion Heaters
Immersion heaters will vary based on their
installation postures. Typically there are 3
postures you can choose from.
Over-the-Side Heaters
Flanged Heaters
Threaded/Screw Plug Heaters
  • Uses bent heating tubes that are welded to heater
  • Must be welded to vessel or system
  • Use with high pressure vessels
  • Often used in chemical manufacturing and food
    processing industries
  • Durable
  • For systems that dont allow side heating
  • Heating elements are positioned along the side of
    system
  • Primarily used in systems where the heated fluid
is not stored in the same vessel
  • Tube shaped heating elements are welded to heater
  • Heater is screwed or plugged to system through
    threaded opening
  • Used for chemicals and fluids
  • Easy to handle
  • Energy efficient

5
Selection Parameters
  • Selecting an immersion heater requires knowledge
of immersion heating technology and engineering.
When deciding on a heater, here are some factors
    to consider
  • Become knowledgeable of the sheath or material of
    the heater.
  • Ask about the external design of the system and
whether or not it can be disbanded or has fixed
    parts.
  • Copper and steel immersion heaters are generally
the most suitable for food manufacturing.

6
Influencing Factors
  • Additionally, there are many factors that will
directly affect the performance of a heater.
    These include
  • The viscosity, density and reactive prosperities
    of the solution
  • The amount of impurities that is in the fluid
  • Sheath corrosion, humidity and level of debris
  • Temperature of sheaths maximum heat resistance

7
Vegetable Oil Heating
Vegetable oil heating is one of the most common
applications of immersion heaters in the food
processing industry. Viscosity is critical for
the success of oil heating. Thats why WATTCO
uses digitally controlled thermocouples that will
turn the heater on and off at just the right
time.
