  • The purpose of this write up is to give you and
your family information to guide you through the
process of having a total hip replacement
operation, including things you should know about
    before and after your operation.
  • The hip is a ball-and-socket joint which
comprises of the head of the femur (thigh bone)
which forms the ball and the acetabulum, a cup
like socket in the pelvic bone.

6
YOUR HIP REPLACEMENT IS MADE UP OF THREE PARTS
  • ? A metal stem is placed into your thigh bone.
  • ? A metal or ceramic ball replaces the worn head
of the thigh bone and is mounted on the metal
    stem
  • ? A socket is placed into the pelvis to replace
the worn socket (the socket is made either of
high density polyethylene or made of metal lined
    with ceramic or polyethylene)

GUIDE FOR PATIENTS
WHAT IS A FRACTURED NECK OF FEMUR (NOF)?
  • The hip joint is a ball and socket joint. A
fractured neck of femur is when the top part of
the hip bone (the ball) becomes broken. It is
common in elderly patients, even after a trivial
fall. As a result, the patient is unable to stand
up and mobilize and any attempt to move the hip
    is severely painful.

  • A sprained ankle is a very common injury. A
sprained ankle can happen not only during sports
but also to anyone stepping on an uneven surface
or suffering a twisting injury to the ankle.
  • The ligaments of the ankle hold the ankle bones
and joint in position. They protect the ankle
    joint from abnormal movements- especially
twisting, turning, and rolling of the foot.

  • Tennis elbow is a painful condition of the elbow.
Despite the name, apart from playing tennis,
several other activities can also cause this
    condition.
  • Tennis elbow is an inflammation of the tendons
that join the forearm muscles on the outer aspect
of the elbow. The forearm muscles and tendons
become damaged from overuse, i.e. repeating the
same motions again and again. This leads to pain
and tenderness on the outside of the elbow.

  • The forearm has two bones, the radius the ulna.
The radius is the larger of the two bones.
  • A fracture of the distal radius occurs when the
area of the radius near the wrist breaks.
  • Distal radius fractures are very common. The
radius is the most commonly broken bone in the
arm. Most common mechanism of injury is a fall on
    the outstretched hand.

CARPAL TUNNEL SYNDROME
CARPAL TUNNEL SYNDROME IS A CONDITION WHICH
CAUSES HAND AND FINGER TINGLING, NUMBNESS AND
PAIN. IT IS MORE COMMON IN WOMEN THAN MEN.
  • The carpal tunnel is a narrow, tunnel-like
structure in the wrist. The wrist (carpal) bones
form the base and sides of this tunnel and the
top of the tunnel is covered by a strong band of
connective tissue called the transverse carpal
    ligament.
  • The carpal tunnel has nerves which control
sensation of thumb, index and long finger.
Orthopedic surgeon in Kolkata tells us about its
    treatment.
