Summary
The global market for biorefinery applications
reached 342.8 billion in 2012. This market is
expected to reach 387 billion in 2013 and 700.7
billion in 2018 with a compound annual growth
rate(CAGR) of 12.6. This report provides -A
complete techno-economic and environmental
analysis of industrial biorefinery
applications. -Analyses of global market trends,

Introduction
STUDY GOAL AND OBJECTIVES BCC Research has
completed a study on the demand for biorefinery
applications. In industry, biorefineries employ
the techniques of modern molecular biology to
reduce the environmental impact of
manufacturing. This BCC Research report
investigates the key factors and issues that will
influence the global demand for biorefinery
applications over the next five years to 2018. It
assesses the critical factors influencing demand
such as public policy initiatives, compatibility
and the interface with conventional refinery
products. In addition to current and proposed
production capacity, it presents a forecast of
biorefinery applications in the global chemicals
and energy markets for 2013 through 2018.
4
The objectives of this BCC Reserch report are,
therefore-Understanding the various
biorefinery products and applications.-Understand
ing the importance of the biorefinery industry
and where it fits in the economy.-Appreciating
biomass resource availability.-Understanding the
various types of technologies involved in biomass
transformation.-Understanding the basic
concepts, principles of operation and equipment
used for biorefineries.-Understanding the basic
structure of the biorefinery industry and its
interaction with the hydrocarbon-based industry.
5
-Understanding the typical operations and
requirements for the establishment of the
biorefinery platform. -Evaluating the results of
regional diversification in biorefinery
feedstocks and conversion technologies. -Quantifyi
ng the market and end use of biorefinery
products. Providing a critical evaluation of the
current status of commercial biorefinery markets
and how recent environmental legislation and
breakthroughs in technology will make the use of
biobased products competitive with established
hydrocarbon-based platforms.
6
REASONS FOR DOING THE STUDY The use of biomass
as raw material for bioproducts such as
materials, chemicals, pharmaceuticals and energy
has received significant worldwide attention
during the last decade. Thus, 183 countries
worldwide have signed and ratified the Kyoto
Protocol to the United Nations Framework
Convention on Climate Change, which establishes a
legal binding commitment for the reduction of
four greenhouse gases carbon dioxide, methane,
nitrous oxide and sulphur hexafluoride.
Conventional resources, mainly fossil fuels, are
becoming limited because of the rapid increase in
energy demand and population growth.
7
This imbalance in energy demand and supply along
with increased greenhouse gas emissions has
placed immense pressure not only on consumer
prices but also on the environment, prompting
mankind to look for more sustainable energy and
material resources. Biomass is one such
environmentally friendly renewable resource from
which various useful products can be generated
for application in chemicals, materials, energy,
medicine and fuels. A new system similar to a
petroleum refinery is required to convert biomass
into these value-added products. This system is
known as a biorefinery.
