U.S. Education System
  • The post-secondary education system in the
United States is among the finest in the world.
There are over 3500 colleges and universities in
the United States, and 1300 2-year community
colleges. Today, over 20 million American
students are enrolled in colleges or
universities, and half are enrolled at community
colleges. Thats 10,000,000 college students in
    the community college system.
  • Each year, over 500,000 students from
around the world come to the United States to
earn a college or university degree, and to
experience first-hand the American culture. And
almost 100,000 of these international students
    enroll at community colleges.

From a Community College a student can go
anywhere . . . . .
7
Education Pathways
  • Community Colleges are the beginning of
the education pathway for both American and
    international students. Starting from a
Community College, students can continue their
academic careers by transferring to other
colleges and universities for baccalaureate and
    other advanced degrees.

About Community Colleges
  • Community colleges developed during President
Kennedys administration as a means of providing
    affordable, convenient, and comprehensive
    post-secondary education for high school
    graduates.
  • Community colleges serve the communities in which
they are located, and for this reason normally do
not include on-campus residences. Most students
commute to classes at community colleges.
  • Community colleges offer programs ranging in
duration from one month to three years.
  • Community Colleges grant a number of degrees and
certificates, with the Associate of Arts (A.A.)
degree being the most widely earned.
  • The Associate of Arts degree is also know as the
Transfer degree, because students may transfer
to a 4-year university upon completion of the
    A.A. degree.
  • Students generally take core courses during
their 1st and 2nd years at community colleges,
and then complete the 3rd and 4th year of
academic study at the university. It is at the
university that most students concentrate on
    their major courses.

10
Why Community Colleges are a good choice.
  • Open Enrollment
  • Any international student will be admitted to a
U.S. community college provided they are at least
17 years of age and a high school graduate.
  • Cost
  • A year of study at a community college is 1/3
the cost of attending a university. Average
annual cost-of-education at a community college
is 15,000 including ALL COLLEGE AND HOUSING
    COSTS
  • Programs
  • Community colleges offer a very wide range of
    program choices.
  • Class Size
  • Community colleges have much smaller class sizes
    than universities, especially for first-year
    core courses.
  • Technology
  • Community colleges are state-supported, with
stable budgets and a strong commitment to
    state-of-the-art technology and information
    systems.
  • Support
  • International student populations at community
colleges are often much less than at
universities, with more immediate contact with
    faculty and support staff.

Intensive English LanguagePrograms at CCS
  • TWO campuses TWO ESL programs
  • Spokane Falls Community College is home to the
Intensive English Language Program (IELP). This
program includes 20 hours of instruction per week
    in four levels.
  • Spokane Community College international students
learn English at the Spokane College of English
    Language (SCEL). This program is
super-intensive, with 22.5 hours of instruction
    per week.
  • Students in the final level of instruction at
SCEL are also permitted to take one regular
college course as part of the EAP ONE option
  • Students entering SCEL may also take an on-line
placement examination before leaving their home
country so that they will know in advance
approximately how long they should expect to
study in the ESL program before entering regular
    academic study.
  • New students at both the IELP and the SCEL are
given an English language placement examination
during Orientation in order to determine at what
level they will begin their ESL instruction.

CCS Homestay Program . . .one of our BEST
features . . .
  • The Homestay Program offers students the
    opportunity to improve their communication
skills, experience American culture on a personal
and daily basis, and build a long-term
    relationship with an American family.
  • Most new international students select Homestay
for their first housing choice. Homestay offers a
stable and supportive environment for new
international students, and gives the students a
chance to become familiar and comfortable with
    life in Spokane.
  • Often, after one or two terms living in a
Homestay, students will join a roommate for
living in an apartment near campus.
  • The Homestay Program is part of the International
Programs Office, under the administration of Mrs.
Teresa Gay. Many of our families have served as
Homestay hosts for many years, with many
    different international students. Our families
have been carefully chosen and are as varied as
our culture, including families, single parents,
    young couples, retirees and singles.
  • How does Homestay affect a students English
skills? Homestays provide the new international
student with many opportunities for conversation
practice. With intensive ESL study during the
day, and conversation during home hours, the
    international students English skills develop
    very quickly.

I-20s and F-1 Visa
  • I-20s are issued within 48 hours of receipt of a
    completed application packet.
  • Normally we issue I-20s for a 3-year duration of
    study.
  • I-20s are normally sent by Express Mail with
delivery to most international locations in 7
    days.
  • Fedex delivery of I-20s is available at the
request of, and for the account of, the
    recipient.
  • F-1 Student Visas are being issued much more
    easily now.

65
Student Employment
  • Work and Study is not possible in the U.S.
  • Study then Work is possible.
  • To explain
  • Anytime an international student completes a
program of at least 9 months duration, they
qualify for a one year work authorization.
  • This allows the student to work anywhere in the
United States for up to 12 months.
  • We encourage international students to take
advantage of this great opportunity to continue
their discovery of the United States, to develop
further professional skills, and to perfect their
    English.

Community Colleges of Spokane FLEX Year Plan
If your students love summer, but arent sure
about winter, consider the CCS FLEX Year
Plan. Normally, students attend Fall, Winter and
Spring terms, and take Summer term as their
annual holiday (July mid September. With the
FLEX Year Plan, students attend Spring, Summer
and Fall terms, and take Winter term as their
annual holiday (Jan mid March. FLEX Year
Plan is great for students from equatorial
regions of the world (Singapore, Indonesia,
Central America). FLEX Year allows students to
return home for Lunar New Year Christmas.
With FLEX Year, there is no penalty.
Students still have the same courses to choose
from, and can still earn their Associate degree
(the TRANSFER degree) in just two years.
