Clean or Dirty

  • Make sure that medications are room temperature.

Why perform ear instillations?
  • Soften cerumen.
  • Instill an antibiotic.
  • Instill and antiinflammatory.

Why perform ear irrigations?
  • Clean the external auditory meatus.
  • Relieve inflammation.
  • Dislodge impacted cerumen.
  • Apply antiseptics.
  • Apply heat.

Before you begin an irrigation
  • Ask the patient if he/she has a hx. of ear
    drainage.
  • Ask the patient if he/she has ever had a
    perforation.

Eye Instillations and Irrigations
  • Eye instillations are performed for the following
    reasons
  • Dilate the pupil
  • Constrict the pupil
  • Relieve pain
  • Treat infection and inflammation
  • Anesthetize the eye
  • Stimulate circulation of the eye

Eye Irrigations
  • Performed to relieve inflammation
  • Remove secretions
  • Prepare for eye surgery
  • Wash away foreign bodies or chemicals
  • Provide antibacterial or antifungal effects
