2The aim of this session is to answer the
following questions
- What do we mean by delivering integration and
what are the challenges? - What does the Adapters Club do?
- What are adapters?
- What integration is being developed and by whom?
- How can you get involved?
- What is the Supplier Engagement Programme?
- What are the National Projects experiences?
- Q A?
3Application integration
Front-to-back-office, cross-organisation,
cross-partnership, multi-agency, cross-vendor
integration - requires software adapters
(translators) between applications
Partner or multi-agency Application
Front-office Application
Back-office Application
Back-office Application
4What are the typical integration challenges?
- integration components have been
- Proprietary closed specific to each software
vendor, application, operating system and even
software release - Expensive, typically costs 10k - 40K per
adapter and you may need dozens of them - Historically lacking standards and standards
enforcement - Build once, sell many - suppliers previously
had no incentive to re-use code
5 What does the Adapters Club do?
- Provides the management and technical guidance
that enables suppliers to deliver standardised
integration components to their customers. - Provides common integration mechanisms thatcan
be utilised by Local Authorities to - Introduce and enforce an integration standards
- Reduce the costs of integration
- Supports the Local Authority throughout the
process
6What are adapters?
- Adapters are integration components, written by
suppliers to agreed standards, that request and
receive the information from (other) suppliers
applications, without having to know how those
applications will service the request.
- An adapter provides an application-independent
integration mechanism, with the capability to
seamlessly amalgamate information across multiple
business applications from multiple suppliers, in
a cohesive manner.
- Adapter definitions are mapped to the esd-toolkit
(LGSL) business processes
7Adapters Club Workstreams
- 40 Suppliers working across nine work streams
- 90 Business transactions identified
- Approx. 100 XML schemas already defined
- Local Authorities engaged in proof of concepts

9How Can I Get Involved?
- Tell us what integration you need.
- Well help you identify who else has the same
need.Partnerships get better solutions
(technical commercial) - Tell us what integration you already have.
- Make standard integration part of every
software tender process - Understand exactly what integration your supplier
provides. - Are they a member of the Adapters Club?
- Is everything you need included, or is
integration a cost option? - Even if your supplier is a member, when you need
integration please join the Adapters Club. - Why? Because Change Management for adapters will
only work if we know youve got a particular
adapter. - We need your input and feedback to drive the Club
forward
10The Supplier Engagement Programme
To create and inform a more knowledgeable
supplier Local Authority marketplace
- A Programme, based at Lambeth, designed to
- Help inform Local Authorities about supplier
capabilities and experience - Help shape suppliers capabilities to meet Local
Authority requirements - Provide information about the marketplace
- Adapters Club
- Defining standard business processes and
technical standards for the development of
integration adapters between systems. - Led by Bharat Vyasbvyas_at_lambeth.gov.uk
Market Intelligence Created a market intelligence
portal enabling Local Authorities, suppliers and
other stakeholders to share knowledge and
information on e-Gov initiatives. Led by Suki
Bhandari sbhandari_at_lambeth.gov.uk
11- Local Authority Market Intelligence Portal
(www.LAMIP.org) - 1300 users (64 are Local Authority employees)
- 400 Suppliers listed
- Adapters Club
- Workstreams
- Adapters available and in development
- Supplier activity
- Engagement Model and Guiding Principles
- Application Form for membership
12National Adapters Club
- RYOGENS Case Study
- Presented by Esprit Ltd
- 20th April 2005
13RYOGENS The National Adapter Club
- We hope that this presentation will provide
- An insight into our choice to join the Adapter
Club - A inside view of the Adapter Club process
- Details of our experience with the Adapter Club
- An understanding of the benefits we have found
Esprit has worked together with the Adapters Club
and together we have successfully created an
effective integration solution.
14What is the RYOGENS National Project?
- RYOGENS is a national e-government project funded
by the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister (ODPM) - RYOGENS is a multi agency web-based system that
helps practitioners from different agencies to
share concerns about young people at risk - The aim is to identify, assess and refer
vulnerable individuals before their needs become
critical.
RYOGENS is a combination of a toolkit and
software application used by Social Care
practitioners to help them to help young people
at risk .
15Why the need to integrate?
- Broader integration is complementary to our
Multi-Agency approach - Opening RYOGENS to other systems is in line with
the e-government joined up initiative - Productivity benefits - electronic sharing is
instantaneous and reduces duplicate work - The need to integrate was identified by our users
as a logical extension to their use of RYOGENS
Through integration with other Local Authority
systems the RYOGENS community can work more
effectively.
16Why did we choose the Adapter Club?
- The Adapter Club promote a Standards based
British Standards and e-GIF methodology - The Adapter Club suggest a common technical
infrastructure for software integration - Adapter Club work-streams provide a
collaborative, multi-vendor framework - By operating at a pan-National-Project level
greater consistency is assured across the board
The Adapter Club gave us the advice and
opportunities we required to develop a truly open
and standard integration platform for RYOGENS
17What did our practical experience involve?
- An introductory session
- An initial set of five transactions were
discussed - We identified points of commonality
- Local Authority Workshops
- Workshops were held with two authorities
- We took their input and considerations on board
- Vendor Workshops
- Two workshops were held with five vendors working
in the health and social care field - The contents of the transactions was established
The Adapter Club provided a collaborative
approach involving representatives of each of the
key stakeholders of an integration project
18What have been the immediate benefits?
- The pragmatic approach of the Adapter Club
enabled us to establish an approach in only 8
weeks - Consultation with Local Authorities assures us
that we are meeting our users needs - Consultation with other vendors would not have
been easily achievable without the Adapter Club - This direct contact with other vendors has given
us the broadest view of integration issues
By involving both Local Authorities and other
vendors we delivered a richer, more flexible
result within a commercial timescale
19What of the future?
- Increased use of standards will simplify on-going
system integration needs - The development of new standards can be driven by
the practical needs of real projects - A common technical infrastructure can reduce
complexity - Further development of a schema and transaction
repository will benefit both vendors and Local
Authorities
As more schemas are defined and more transactions
and adapters are implemented the cost and effort
associated with system integration can be
significantly reduced

from? How may we help you?
