Fore-Optics Interface Rev-2

Only Fraction of Bolt Pattern on AO Bench is
shown Holes are spaced 25 mm apart. The Bolt
Pattern is square. These M6 and are positioned in
proper orientation. In reality, the Bolt Pattern
covers entire AO Bench
Revised Fore-Optics Interface
3
The Material for the Fore-Optics Interface is
Steel, so the CTE between AO Surface Plate
Material and Interface are matched and no
stresses will result upon ambient temperature
changes.
  • I would like to propose to weld the Fore-Optics
    Interface.
  • Fabrication Process
  • Machine individual parts
  • Weld
  • Stress Relieve and Anneal
  • Machine as necessary

4
Mounting Interface to AO Bench As shown, there
are 4 sets of clearance holes in the
Interface. Each set has 12-16 mounting holes. The
Bolt size is M6 with an average preload capacity
of 19kN or 4300 lbs. The idea of using so many
mounting holes is to SPREAD the Preload over a
large area!
5
The Interface is making contact with the AO Bench
at 4 pads. The pads are ¾ mm high. This is not
the ideal kin-e-matic mount, but it will insure
the stability of the Interface. Shims will have
to be used under one of the pads. This is to make
sure that we do not distort the AO Surface when
bolting the Interface to the AO Bench. While the
Interface is being bolted down, we should monitor
the nearby AO Surface with an indicator so we can
minimize distortion by using the right size
shims. Note I am assuming that the Interface
will remain in place for both the IRCS and HiCIAO
Instruments.

What needs to be determined We need to add the
translation stage that moves the f-conversion
optics in/out of the beam. In this picture this
would be in/out of the page. This information is
necessary so I can make sure nothing of the
present design of the Interface collides with the
Interface.
7
Cuts on Gussets necessary to move f-conversion
optics in/out of the optical beam. Note that
further stiffening members can be added to the
vertical plate of the Interface (red color)

New Stage will sit on this side it will move
f-conversion optics in/out of optical beam. It
also must clear the Fore-Optics Interface
