Background
  • Project was originally identified by the Squaxin
Island Tribe Natural Resources and brought to the
    attention of the Lead Entity
  • All three adjacent landowners were supportive of
    the project
  • Thurston Conservation District and Washington
Department of Fish and Wildlife developed
interlocal agreement and applied for SRFB funding
    in 2001
  • This was one of the last projects that WDFW
    implemented on private property.

    1940s
  • Removal of dam restored passage to 1.33 miles of
    habitat
  • Species Present
  • Coho
  • Coastal cutthroat
  • Steelhead

8
Cost
  • SRFB funding 243,750
  • WDFW match 41,600 (equipment labor)
  • Thurston CD match 2,650 (plants labor)
  • Total project cost 288,000

9
Design Permitting
  • Project designed by WDFW
  • Engineer Pat Powers
  • All permitting work completed by WDFW

10
Instream Project Implementation
  • WDFW construction crew completed all construction
work WDFW engineers performed all construction
    oversight/inspection.
  • Pre-cast concrete bridge 65 ft. long x 12 ft.
wide with HS 20 load rating, abutments pre-cast
    off site
  • Bridge arrived in three pieces and was placed
    with two cranes
  • Temporary bypass road upstream of bridge site
required for duration of project (3 months)
  • Project required removal of approx. 1,200 cubic
yards of accumulated sediment upstream from dam
to reconstruct 300 ft. of stream channel,
sediment disposed of on adjacent landowner
    property
  • Three pools created and numerous pieces of LWD
    installed

11
Riparian Project Implementation
  • TCD developed a riparian planting plan and
installed 240 native trees and shrubs in
    disturbed areas.
  • TCD harvested and installed several thousand live
willow and red-osier dogwood cuttings in willow
    terraces and along stream banks.
  • TCD treated knotweed with herbicide in Sept. 2004
and continues to try and eradicate this weed.

Lessons Learned
  • Water is very powerful, even in a stream this
small. The first winter storms following
completion blew out several channel spanning logs
and a tremendous amount of gravel has moved
    through the project area.
  • The majority of the project has remained very
stable, with only two small areas of localized
    bank erosion.
  • Small LWD jams installed by hand can be effective
at controlling bank erosion and building gravel
    bars.
  • Knotweed is very difficult to eradicate. Many
people still arent aware of this invasive weed
    and the problems it causes.
