Creativity, Action, Service (CAS) began in
September
  • Creativity arts, and other experiences that
    involve creative thinking.
  • Action physical exertion contributing to a
    healthy lifestyle, complementing academic work
    elsewhere in the Diploma Programme.
  • Service unpaid and voluntary an exchange that
has a learning benefit for the student. The
rights, dignity and autonomy of all those
    involved are respected.

5
Key Logistical Points
  • Ms. Martinez (room 121) is the CAS Coordinator
  • CAS is project-based (not about logging hours)
  • Need to combine the big three to ensure that the
student is focused on being well-rounded
  • Focused on the intrinsic rewards

6
Extended Essay (EE) begins in Januaryish
  • The purpose of the extended essay is to show your
ability to engage in personal research and to
present your findings in an organized manner.
  • An Extended Essay has the following traits
  • It is an experience in independent research
  • The topic is selected by the student
  • It has a focused research question
  • It includes a personal perspective
  • It is written in depth on a limited topic
  • It uses primary sources
  • It is approximately 4000 words

7
Key Logistical Points
  • Mr. Marshall is the EE Coordinator
  • We will be meeting at the start of next year to
    discuss more specific details
  • Start thinking about topics that interest you
  • Start thinking about teachers who you think will
    make good advisors

8
Theory of Knowledge (TOK) begins in January
  • Encouraging the development of critical thinking
and reflection on all of the students
experiences as learners (This includes life
experiences as well as the academic disciplines
    within the IB Diploma).
  • As a consequence, students are expected to be
    able to
  • Analyze knowledge
  • Question assumptions
  • Develop their own hypotheses
  • Develop their solutions
  • Clarify their values
  • Make sense of what they encounter. In TOK they
have the opportunity to step back from this
    relentless acquisition of new knowledge(TOK
    Guide 2006)

9

12
What am I buying?
  • IB states clearly that their goal is not to
ensure that students are able to skip college
classes. That being said, the universities do
greatly value IB, making it very possible for
Diploma students to earn college credits in high
    school, so that they can
  • Save money
  • Finish early
  • Earn a second major
  • Travel abroad
  • Take classes at a slower pace
  • Be confident that they are capable students,
prepared to take part in the most rigorous
courses at any college in the world

13
College Acceptance Rates (2005)
14
Studies have shown
  • IB students earn higher SAT scores (1213 vs.
1177) than peers in the, often considered,
    equally elite AP program (2006)
  • IB students earn higher grade point averages (a
-0.3 drop versus a -0.8 drop from high school
grade point average to college) than peers in the
    AP program (2006)
  • 42 of the top 100 high schools in America were IB
    World Schools (2007)
  • Analysis of students academic records indicated
that IB diploma holders obtained better end of
degree course grades and higher overall academic
    averages than non-IB students (2006)
  • success in the IB Diploma Programme is a good
predictor of students ability to cope well with
the academic demands placed on them by
    universities (Caffyn, 2007)

15
What am I buying?
  • Simply
  • A greater opportunity at college acceptance
    letters
  • An opportunity at earning college credit
  • A much greater opportunity of finishing college
    successfully
