information and advocacy on matters affecting the
participation of people with disabilities in
recreation, sport, tourism and the arts. -

Club held a successful skills clinic a
lightning premiership - A grant application was made a steering
committee formed to co-ordinate the
establishment implementation of an ongoing
football competition

- FIDA History
- April 1991 the Football Integration Development
Association (FIDA) officially launched -
- 6 teams throughout the Melbourne metropolitan
area - Principal support from programs within local
government

- FIDA Statement of Purpose
- Initiate access for persons with an intellectual
disability to the game of Australian Rules
football. - Develop, manage promote a football competition
relevant to the skill level of persons with an
intellectual disability. -
- Create necessary skills confidence in the
participants so that integration processes can
develop.

- Encourage existing generic community groups to
include persons with an intellectual disability
in their clubs. - Promote integration to sport providers to
encourage a receptive environment which will
accommodate the needs of people with an
intellectual disability.

that have comparable objectives. - Consult with the AFL, relevant councils,

- 18 teams, metro rural, 3 divisions
- Funding fine at present
- Club support varies in quality
- Significant increase in local club interest
since 1997 - Suffers from problems that afflict many regular
footy competitions player eligibility, coaching
quality, lack of volunteers - Encouraging players to move into community teams
- FIDA structure itself

- Despite the room for improvement there is no
doubt that player numbers for this competition
are increasing. - More and more people with disabilities around the
State want to have a go and are doing so within
community football clubs. - If they are tall enough they might just hear
their coach tell them - YOURE IN THE RUCK
- AND GO PIES
