In this day and age when program
certification is relevant to the overall value of
promoting KY Tech programs, Bullitt Co. Carpentry
Instructor Don Atwell has been hard at work to
ensure that his program met the standards to
become certified through the Associated Builders
and Contractors, Inc. (ABC). ABC of
Kentuckiana, Inc. President and CEO, Philip J.
Anderson, formally awarded ABC program
certification to Don Atwell during a special
ceremony at the school. While many KY Tech
carpentry instructors have become involved with
ABC, Atwells program is the first to be
officially certified through ABC.
Contractors have to work hard to bring the
bright young minds into their industry, said
Anderson. We appreciate schools like the
Bullitt Co. ATC because this provides an avenue
where we can get those bright minds into the
industry. I really believe this is a
milestone for our KY Tech system of schools. I
feel honored to be the first school to receive
ABC certification, said Atwell. Upon
graduation, my students can go directly to work
and/or enroll in ABC classes at night which will
ultimately provide them with an opportunity to
make more money and from my perspective, thats
what its about the power to learn and earn
more income. The Department for
Technical Education is pleased to be able to work
with ABC to provide an additional avenue of
certification in the KY Tech system of schools,
said Emil Jezik, commissioner, Department for
Technical Education. We believe it is our
responsibility to offer a variety of options for
KY Tech programs statewide as a result of the
diversity within the system. ABC has been
willing to help us meet systemic goals.
From Kentuckiana ABCs perspective, The number
of students completing employment applications is
growing, says Education Director Mary Jo Morton.
Program certification provides a valuable link
between the ATC, ABC, and our contractors.
The ABC network is approximately 800 strong in
Kentucky and exceeds 23,000 members nationwide.
