Introduction
  • The project intends to adapt, extend and apply an
existing tool oriented to astronomical problems.
  • effective and intuitive way of visualisation
    analysis
  • advanced visualization techniques Stereography
    and Virtual Reality.
  • large amount of data produced by numerical
    simulations and observational surveys.
  • This project is for
  • Professional (researchers)
  • Non specialists (general science dissemination
    and school education)
  • The project is
  • a Trial
  • 2 years long (from sep 2001 to aug 2003)
  • A collaboration has been established with
another EC funded project, ESTEDI, dealing with
    the application of multi-dimensional databases
    in astrophysics

Objectives To collect requirements on how to
adapt the original AstroMD in order to meet the
needs of the partners. Data set characteristics
and current work-flow to be investigated for each
single research task and educational To define
sw and hw environment to ensure portability and
collaborative workingTo establish corporate
feeling among project partnersThe User Group
will be deeply involved to ensure a general
consensus

  • Work done Collection of requirements was
    achieved through bilateral meetings between
CINECA and each single partner and a final
    meeting.
  • Initial training on AstroMD has been done to all
    partners.
  • Deliverables due
  • D3 Assessment and requirement analysis report
    (final version at month 6)

WP4 to 7 Applications
From month 2 (4) to month 16 (18) Coordinator
specific partner 10-11 months
CINECA 2-3 months IRA works for 2 months in
Catalogues and radio sources All work for 1
month in educational
  • Objectives To define the tools and to add
functionality as decided in WP3 for ...
  • performing a set of numerical simulations using
different cosmological models, and use the data
produced as input data for validating the new
    features
  • arranging a catalogue of celestial objects from
the VIRMOS Survey and use the data as input data
for validating the new features. Other available
surveys (galaxies and stars) can be used
  • collecting a set of extragalactic radio sources
to use as input data for validating the new
    features
  • specializing the software tool and to add
    functionality for educational purposes
  • defining a number of different didactic tracks,
that can be chosen interactively according to the
    competence level of the students.
