Starting at the broad scale Wisconsin has three
major basins where surface water drains

  • The Federal Programs divide the state into Major
    Land Resource Areas
  • Northeastern Wisconsin Drift Plain
  • More than 90 percent of this MLRA is in farms,
nearly 60 percent of which is cropland.
  • Feed grains and hay are the chief crops.
  • The rest of the land in farms is about equally
divided between tame pasture and farm woodlots.
  • Less than 5 percent of the MLRA is used for urban
    development.

  • Watershed Management Units
  • Hydrologically based subdivisions
  • Wisconsin has 24 WMU
  • Originally developed to support the old Water
Quality Management Plans (aka. Basin Plans).
  • Being replaced by the State of the Basin Reports.
  • Relationship to HUCs Approximately equivalent to
"Regions" (Level 4, 8-digit Hydrologic Unit
    Hierarchy (HUC)).

  • Watersheds
  • Used primarily to prepare reference base maps for
the DNR NPS Water Pollution Abatement Program
  • Generally known as the NPS Priority Watershed
    Program.
  • They are a further hydrologic subdivision of the
    Water Management Units.
