Habitat
  • Dolphins can be found all around the world but
    rarely in the Arctic.
  • There are 10,000-30,000 dolphins off the
    northeastern United States.

3
Description
  • Dolphins have a rubbery sort of skin.
  • This makes the dolphin able to glide through the
    water.
  • Their skin is gray which helps them blend in to
the water when they are near the surface.

4
Description Continued
  • Dolphins also have a jelly like substance in
their eye. This may make them look like they are
crying but actually it is keeping the salt out.
  • A dolphins tail is called a fluke this make them
    able to swim fast.
  • The flippers help to steer.

5
Description Continued
  • Dolphins breathe through a blowhole. This lets
them breathe without having to stick their whole
head up to breathe. They only have to stick up
    their blowhole.
  • An adult dolphin weighs 330 pounds through 440
pounds and can grow up to 13 feet long.
  • A baby dolphin weighs 30 pounds and is about 3
    feet long.

6
Dolphins Eat
  • Dolphins are meat eaters their diet is based on
    fish, shrimp, eels, and squid.
  • A dolphin use its teeth to catch their prey
    rather than chewing with them.

7
Enemies
  • Dolphins have very few enemies such as sharks,
    fishing nets, and pollution.
  • Man is dolphins worst enemy. A number of dolphins
    are killed by fishing nets.
  • Dolphins outsmart the sharks by swimming in
circles around the shark(s), taking turns hitting
    the sharks.

8
Young
  • Dolphins are live born, not hatched and live for
    about 30 years or older.
  • Because they are mammals their mothers nurse
    them.
  • Dolphins are single born, rarely will dolphins
    have twins.
  • A baby dolphin is called a calf, a male is called
a bull, and a female is called a cow.

Other Interesting Facts

  • Spotted dolphins get their spots when they are
    adults just like a Dalmatian.
  • Dolphins use clicks and whistles for
    communication with each other.
  • Scientists are disagreeing on which is smarter a
    dolphin or a chimpanzee.
  • Dolphins breathe when they are sleeping by
floating on the water exposing their blowhole.
