Study Objective
  • To obtain data on fear levels and actual assault
    experienced by the nursing staff in Southwark.
  • The aim was to measure the level of safety staff
    feel working and travelling to work in
    Southwark Inpatient Wards at the Maudsley
    Hospital.
  • It also measures the confidence staff have in
    police and SLAM management in handling matters of
    assault at work and the protocols and procedures
    that have been implemented for their protection.

  • This survey was jointly developed with the
    Metropolitan Police Safer Neighbourhood Team
    based in Camberwell, Southwark.

Methodology
  • Questionnaire designed
  • Setting - Maudsley Hospital, South East London.
  • Participants were all nursing staff working
    within in-patient wards in Southwark.
  • Respondents (n126)

Fear of Assault Ratings
27 felt moderately fearful and 21 felt most
fearful. Therefore 48 of staff work with
unacceptable fear levels.

Staff Assaulted at Work
66 of staff have been assaulted at work. 33
have not been assaulted at work

Staff Assaulted with a weapon
30 of staff have been assaulted with a weapon
(includes furniture). 56 have not been and 11
felt it was not applicable. 2 did not specify.

Time off Work as a Result of being Assaulted with
a Weapon
Out of 38 staff who admitted they have been
assaulted with a weapon, 24 staff took time off
work as a result, which is 63.

Informing a Manager of all Assaults at Work
81 of staff would inform the manager of all
assaults at work. 7 would not inform the
manager and 4 felt it was not applicable to
them. 8 did not specify.

Informing the Police of all Assaults at Work
46 of staff would inform the police of all
assaults at work. 37 would not. 6 felt it was
not applicable and 11 did not specify.

Staff Satisfaction with Police Response
33 of staff were satisfied with the police
response to their report, 29 were not satisfied
and 34 were not applicable. 3 did not specify
their answers.

Explanation of Procedure to Staff after an
Allegation of Assault
The procedure was explained to 42 of the staff
whereas 15 of the staff were not. It did not
apply to 38 of the staff and 5 did not specify
their answers.

not to proceed with the allegation of assault
