Minho liked to do errands with his mother, One
afternoon they went to many different places with
a budget of 50.00 and saw many different things.
Lets see if they can make it through the day
without going over their budget and what types of
things they see throughout their day
6
The first stop was at the Laundromat where they
had to drop off some clothes to be cleaned. They
had to use 3 washing machines at 1.25 each and
then 3 dryers at 0.70 cents for one hour. Each
dryer must stay on for one hour to dry the
clothes completely. How much money is spent at
the Laundromat?

Next they stopped so Minhos mother could get a
hair cut. Her hair cut was 10. How much money
is left in their budget after the hair cut? If
she left a 5 tip, now how much was left in their
budget?

Since it was such a warm day outside, Minho
decided he wanted some ice cream. His mother
ordered a banana split for 3.25 and he ordered
an ice cream cone with chocolate sprinkles for
2.15. How much money did they spend at the Ice
Cream Parlor? How much money is left in their
budget?

As they walked down the street, Minho peered into
a pet store with all sorts of animals. A sign on
the door said there was a sale on birds two
birds for 30 or one for 20. If Minho and his
mother purchased two birds that were on sale,
would they have saved any money rather than
buying only one bird?
13
Solution ?
Although you did not purchase any birds, if you
did, how much money would you save? One bird
equals 20.00 and two birds equals 30.00,
therefore
30.00 (two birds)
-
20.00 (one bird)

Minho and his mother finally arrived at the shoe
store where they picked up his fathers shoes.
It costs 5.75 for a pair of shoes to be
repaired. If Minho had to pick up 3 pairs of
shoes, how much money did he spend at the shoe
repair store? How much money is left in the
budget?

It was just about time for them to pick up their
clothes at the Laundromat. Do you remember how
much their bill came to?

Hint If you dont remember, you can check your
paper and pencil budget sheet

As they were walking by the street, Minho began
counting the tires on each car. Rather than
counting each tire, he counted the number of cars
he saw and then multiplied by the number of tires
on each car. Using multiplication, how many
tires do you see in this picture?
Hint- In this scenario, the trucks and buses have
only 4 tires each.
21
Solution ?
6 vehicles
X 4 tires

24 tires
22
Minho and his mother then walked past some
construction. He counted all the orange cones
and the orange and white barricades. How many
total barriers are there on the construction
site? (Do not count the long barrier with two
legs)
23
Solution ?
7 barricades
5 cones

12 construction barriers

A fire truck had a hard time getting through
because of all of the congestion on the road.
They honked the horn 3 times, then passed the
cars that pulled over. How many tires were on
the road when the fire truck passed Minho?
Hint 2- The fire truck has 8 wheels!
Hint 1- There are 5 cars and 1 fire truck.
25
Solution ?

x 4 Tires
x 8 Tires
8 tires on the fire truck

Minho and his mother finally made it out of the
traffic. They were about to walk under the
railroad, when Minho counted the number of cars
on this train. If each car had 7 windows and
there were 8 train cars, how many windows were
there in total?
27
Solution ?

X 8 windows (on one side)

As they approached their home, they came across a
group of children playing baseball. If one team
scored 7 runs and the other team scored 4 runs,
how many bags were tagged by the runners after
crossing home plate?

After such a long day of errands with his mother,
Minho fell asleep on the couch and had dreams of
his day... The amount of money they spent, the
number of tires in the busy street, and even the
number of windows on one whole train!
31
After the busy day on the streets and around the
town, there was only 0.20 left in Minhos
budget!!
The End!!
When he awoke, Minho was aware of all the numbers
and math around him, and realized how fun it
could be. He also learned how to keep a budget
and was eager to start another afternoon with his
mother!!
