What They Buy ...
  • 20 of tire buyers purchased performance tires as
a changeover from original equipment tires on
    their new cars in 2000.
  • 27 of tire buyers who replaced their original
equipment performance tires chose the same brand
    in 2000, down from 30.7 in 1994.
  • All-season tires accounted for 88 of the
domestic passenger car replacement tire market in
2000, and 83 of those installed as original
    equipment.
  • 51 of participants in a 2000 study said that the
tire brand is one of the factors that influences
    their vehicle purchasing decision.
  • A 2000 dealer survey showed that 34 of custom
wheel buyers are 16-24 years old, 35 are 25-34,
20 are between the ages of 35 and 49 and 11 are
    50 or older.

6
And Finally ...
  • A 2000 study of performance tire customers found
that 32 specify a brand and then buy that same
brand, while 43 specify a brand but make a
different choice based on dealer recommendations.
25 of performance tire consumers do not specify
    a brand.
  • For the average independent tire dealer, tire
sales accounted for 52 of earnings in 2000,
while automotive service was responsible for the
    remaining 48 of revenues.
  • Domestic models account for 68.8 of the vehicles
requiring automotive service at the average
independent tire dealer, with imports making up
the remaining 31.2. Those vehicles that are
serviced average 6.5 years in age.
