Introduction
Have you noticed that there are lots of baseball
card clones available now? Baseball cards have
led to NASCAR cards, football cards, basketball
cards, and even rock star cards. What if the
library had author cards to look at?

Task
  • You will create an author card about Lois Lowry,
    Gary Paulsen, Caroline B. Cooney, Avi, Louis
    Sachar, Paul Zindel, Sid Fleischman, or Joan
    Lowry Nixon that contains the following
  • a picture of the author
  • biographical information (Name, Date of Birth,
    Hometown, Family)
  • list of books that the author wrote

Process
  • Step 1
  • Create a Card
  • Includes
  • a picture on the front
  • biographical information on the back
  • Step 2
  • Research the Author.
  • You will need the following information
  • a picture of the author
  • biographical information (Name, Date of birth,
    Hometown, and Family)
  • list of books that the author wrote

Step I
  • Open Word
  • Save the document
  • File/Save As
  • select Student on Server/Teacher/Period
  • change the File Name to your last name and author
    card
  • Set up the Page
  • click on File/Page Setup
  • select the Margins tab and change the Top, Left,
    and Right margins to .5
  • change the Bottom margin to 4.0
  • change the view to Landscape
  • click on OK
  • select Format/Columns
  • select Two columns and check Line Between
  • Select OK
  • hit the Enter key until the line appears
  • put the cursor back at the beginning of the first
    column
  • The first column will be the front of your card
    and the second column will be the back.

Step 2 Picture
  • Research the Author
  • Picture of Author
  • find a picture of the author and copy/paste it in
    a Word document
  • the picture should be in the first column
  • right click on the picture and select Format
    Picture
  • Click on the Size tab and change the width and
    height to 2.0
  • cite the source of the picture by copying and
    pasting the web address under the picture
  • after pasting in the source, make sure the cursor
    is at the end of the address and then press ENTER
    until the cursor goes to the next column
  • you may need to reposition the picture once the
    line appears between the column
  • save the document
  • Click here to see an example

Step 2 Research
  • Research the Author
  • Go to the Resources page and find the following
    information.
  • Name
  • Date of Birth
  • Hometown
  • Family
  • List of books written by author
  • Enter the information in the second column of the
    Author Card
  • Click here to see the example.
  • Make sure to cite your sources
  • Once the information is typed on the document,
    SAVE

  • Check your card for errors.
  • Is everything spelled correctly?
  • Is the information lined up in the correct
    column?
  • Is there a picture?
  • Have you cited the source of the picture?
  • Did you include the authors name?
  • Date of birth?
  • Hometown?
  • Family?
  • Do you include a list of books written by the
    author?
  • Do you list the sources for your biographical
    research?
  • If you answered YES to all of these questions,
    then you may go to the next step.

Next Step!
  • Create a text box and type in your heading.
  • Click on the text box icon
  • (See the bottom of your screen.)
  • Click and drag open the box in the upper right
    corner
  • Enter your name, date, and period

Finishing the Card
  • fold the card and cut off the bottom section
  • fold the card so that the picture is on the front
    and the information is on the back
  • glue the page together

It's time to print!
  • select Format/Columns and take out the check for
    Line Between
  • select File/Print Preview.
  • make sure everything is just perfect.
  • select Print when you are ready.

  • Your card will be evaluated with the following
    criteria
  • Picture
  • Source of picture
  • Name of Author
  • Date of Birth
  • Hometown
  • Family
  • Books written by Author
  • Source(s) of research
  • Text Box with Heading
