Title: Electricity Flows

1
Electricity Flows
  • Or
  • A River of Energy

2
Lets Get Warmed Up
  • Make of list of things that use electricity
  • At Home
  • At School
  • In our community
  • Dont forget things that use batteries!
  • What has to happen with electricity to make those
    things work?
  • Now click here for more information

3
What is electricity? It is simply the
flow of electrons from one place to another.
During the journey, the electrons go to work
making toast, powering video games, and lighting
light bulbs. Electricity is one of the most
important forms of energy. Electricity produces
light and heat, and it provides power for
household appliances and industrial machinery.
4
Like a river that flows from one place to
another, electricity also flows from one place to
another. When it flows in a circle we call that
circle a circuit. Electric things all have two
electrodes. Think of electrodes as doors for
electricity, an in door and an out door.
Electricity will flow in one electrode and out
the other electrode.
5
Look closely and you will observe 2 electrodes in
the light bulb. The small wires carry the flow of
electrons when a circuit is made and a spacer,
usually made of glass, keeps the wires separated
from one another. The filament is the small wire
that glows.

A battery also has two electrodes, one on top and
one on the bottom. Youve probably noticed that
the the bottom electrode is slightly indented.

Your job is to
  • Create circuits to match the pictures on the
    following slides.
  • Record your results.

For the next 6 slides, first make a prediction
and record it on your document. Then do the
experiment and record the actual results.

facts about electricity! /

What is a Conductor?
  • When electricity moves easily through something,
we call it a conductor. Materials that conduct
electricity are used to make wire for electrical
    circuits.

22
What is an Insulator?
  • When electricity does not move easily through
something, we call it an insulator. Materials
that do not conduct electricity are helpful too.
They can be used to surround or cover electrical
wiring to protect us from getting a shock.
