How did the Nazi decide who was Jewish?
  • The Nazis decided if a persons parents were
    Jewish, then they were Jewish.
  • However, if only one of their grandparents had
been Jewish then they could be classified as
    being German.
  • In 1940, all Jews had to have their passports
stamped with the letter J and had to wear the
yellow Star of David on their jacket or coat.
  • As the Nazis conquered new countries, France,
Russia, Poland, Yugoslavia, they had doctors
    examine potential Jews.

  • In Germany they first came for the Communists,
and I didnt speak up because I wasnt a
Communist. Then they came for the Jews, and I
didnt speak up because I wasnt a Jew. Then they
came for the trade unionists, and I didnt speak
up because I wasnt a trade unionist. Then they
came for the Catholics, and I didnt speak up
because I was a Protestant. Then they came for me
and by that time no one was left to speak up.

-Reverend Martin Niemoeller, Protestant minister,
