To summarize

• A weblog, or blog, is a frequently updated
  website consisting of dated entries arranged in
  reverse chronological order so the most recent
  post appears first".
• Typically blog is run by a single person, and
• usually with hyperlinks to other sites an
  online journal or diary.
• There are as many unique types of blogs as there
  are people.
• Blogs are alternatively called web logs or
  weblogs .

History

• The term "weblog" was coined by Jorn Barger in
  1997.
• In 1998 , Cameron Barrett began compiling a list
  of other sites as he found them in his travels
  around the web (Weblog).
• The short form, "blog," was coined by Peter
  Merholz, who jokingly broke the word weblog into
  the phrase we blog in the sidebar of his blog
  Peterme.com in April or May of 1999

• This rapid growth continued steadily until July
  1999 when Pitas, the first free
  build-your-own-weblog tool launched
• Evan Williams and Meg Hourihan (Pyra Labs)
  launched blogger.com in August ,a service that
  let anyone publish a blog for free by typing in a
  box in their web browser..
• With blogger.com , Blogs were very common in the
  web.

Some Terminology

• Blogging- Authoring a blog, maintaining a blog or
  adding an article to an existing blog.
• blog posts, posts, or entries - Individual
  articles on a blog.
• Blogger- A person who adds posts or entries to
  the website.

Blog basics

• A blog is typically made up of the following
  components
• Title - main title of the post
• Body - main content of the post
• Trackback - links back from other sites
• Comments - comments added by readers
• Permalink - the URL of the full, individual
  article
• Post Date - date time the post was published

• The blogosphere is now 70 million blogs wide
• About 120,000 new blogs are created each day
• 1.5 million posts per day
• 1.4 new blogs are created every second
• 17 posts are made every second

How to blog?

• How to start There are two ways
• Install a blog program, such as WordPress ,
  Moveable Type on your own domain on the web
• Use the blog service provider such as blogger,
  yahoo, etc.
• For people not familiar with operating Windows or
  UNIX server, the latter is recommended

• We create a blog using
• blogger.com, name it and begin posting.
• The following slides will guide you in
• setting up your blog.

• When you arrive at blogger, you see
• that there are three steps
• 1.) create an account,
• 2.) name your blog
• 3.) choose a template. Its that simple and
• easy. Your blog address will end up in
• the http//yourchosenblog.blogspot.com
