Title: The Acquaintance stage

1
The Acquaintance stage
  • Information for the therapist
  • Verbal intake
  • Physiological intake
  • Information for the patient
  • Understanding the Dialogue between his emotional
    state and physiological state
  • Educational Phase explaining the problem to the
patient in new terms that reflects both
    physiology and psychology.

2
Acquaintance Stage
  • During this stage the therapist becomes
acquainted with the patients psychological and
    physiological responses. Via the
    psychophysiological intake two aspects are
    evaluated
  • The patients rate of reactiveness the rate of
physiological change in response to a specific
    stimulus.
  • The patients rate of recovery the path by which
    the psychophysiological reading regains balance
proceeding arousal caused by a stimulus

Liability and Stability

  • Stable line II

5
dialogue between the therapist, patient, and
computer
  • The patient is introduced, for the first time,
to the technique of dialogue between the
    therapist, patient, and computer.
  • He learns how to correlate between physical
    responses and emotional responses that
    accompany him throughout the treatment.

6
Psychophysiological demonstrations.
  • The therapist will show the patient how specific
    external stimuli effect his physiological
    responses.
  • How deviations in modes of behavior create
    different physiological responses, how ones
thoughts and imagination are a powerful component
    in creating physiological changes.

7
The decision
  • The basic assumption Do biofeedback therapy is
when a mind-body approach is needed
  • We will take to therapy any problem that include
    clear elements of stress/anxiety/high arousal
  • It is our job to find a way to ingrate the
    psychological information with the physiological
    data into one comprehensive psychophysiolgical
    approach.

8
The intake
  • The intake should include two aspects
  • Understanding of the problem as experienced by
    the subject
  • Understand the physiological side of the problem
as detected by the biofeedback parameters

9
The verbal intake
  • Understanding the exact details of the problem
  • When (before what? After what?)
  • How (how does it look like? How does it feels
    like?)
  • How does it affect the patient
  • What internal explanations does the patient
    attach to the problem

10
Example
  • The insecurity term could have been understood
in one way before the verbal intake and is
understood differently after the therapist asked
more question and specifically asked for
    examples.
  • Give me few examples is a very useful question.
  • I want to know how does it feel like to be you
    at that moment
  • is it more like feeling X or like feeling Y

11
Another Example
  • The eating problem could have been understood
differently before the intake and afterwards.
  • At the beginning it could be understood as
inability to say no when one faces certain
    foods
  • Later in the intake one could hypothesize that
the food is the remedy for some emptiness

12
The Physiological intake
  • Learning what physiological variables are related
    to the problem.
  • Learning about the stability or the variability
    of the readings
  • Learning how does the patient level of reactivity
  • Learning How well does he adapt after the
    stressor has been introduced.

13
Liability and Stability
  • Labile line
  • Stable line I
  • Stable line II

Some Examples of types of EDA Graph
15
Steps in psychophysiological profile
  • Let the line graph run without any interpretation
  • Test the effect of various factors
  • Breathing
  • Muscle

16
  • Going to a physician
  • Focus on the symptom
  • Going to psychotherapist
  • Focus on the person

SMWB
17
Defining a problem
  • Symptom focused
  • Person focused

Integrative focus
