Title: Stage 2 Stage 3

1
Science Week Challenges Out of This World
Riverina Region
  • Stage 2 / Stage 3

2
Teacher Notes
  • The focus for the challenge is for students to
    design and make a

  • rocket.
  • Each slide takes the child through the design
    process.
  • The student may choose to complete
  • the labelled design drawing section of the
    task
  • and/ or
  • complete a model of their rocket design
  • The following guide will lead the students
through the design and make process
  • steps . It is not a requirement that these
    details be returned.
  • Brainstorm
  • children's experiences and understandings of
    rockets in their world.
  • recent developments of rockets and rocket powered
    vehicles. E.g. Star ship 1.
  • implications for the future of travel for us.

3
  • Students may email their completed rocket
    design drawings to either
  • aldina.craig_at_det.nsw.edu.au
  • or
  • helen.lansdown_at_det.nsw.edu.au
  • by Friday, 20th August 2004
  • Hard copies of design drawings and or photos of
    rocket models may be
  • posted to your SciTech Consultant at either
    the Deniliquin SEA or
  • Wagga SEA office.
  • Please ensure that childs name, school and stage
    are included.
  • It is anticipated that Rocket models will be
sought for Education Week displays in each SEA.
  • Details on collection closer to the date

Your Challenge
You have been asked to design and make a
rocket worthy to lead us into the new space
age. If you are you willing to take the
challenge continue to the next slide

  • What will your rocket look like?
  • Draw your rocket.
  • ( you may choose to use the draw tool on the
computer or complete your design on a separate
    sheet of paper.)
  • Remember to label the parts of your rocket.
  • Include special design features, functional and
    safety features, passengers seating etc.

8
  • Design criteria
  • 1.Your rocket will need to be made from recycled
    materials .
  • 2.It will need to use a sustainable fuel source
e.g. Recycled garbage , hydro, solar etc.
  • 3. Include functional and safety features. It
must be able to carry at least 10 passengers.
  • 4. Consider the appearance of your rocket (the
    aesthetics)

9
  • List the materials you will need in the
    construction of your rocket

10
  • Planning
  • How will you make your rocket ? How will you put
    it together?
  • Write a brief procedure for constructing your
    rocket.
  • Step 1
  • Step 2
  • Step 3
  • Step 4
  • Step 5

11
  • Using your detailed design drawing construct a
    model of your rocket.

12
Evaluation
  • What did you like about your rocket design ?
  • How could you have improved the design?
  • What did you like about your rocket model?
