  • Demonstrate appropriate behavior while attending
    a visual art exhibition in a museum or art
    gallery.
  • Demonstrate respect for personal artwork and the
    artwork of others.
  • Demonstrate thoughtfulness and care in completion
    of artworks.

Is running allowed in the Art Show or Museum?

When entering an art show or museum you should
move about slowly and quietly. Consideration of
others is always appropriate. Soft voices and
slow movements do not distract other people from
viewing and appreciating the art. you should
never run, and horse-play is always
inappropriate. Respectfulness allows others to
enjoy the show .

How quickly should I move through the exhibit?

As a museum or art show visitor you need to
slowly look at each artwork. There is much to
think about and enjoy. You should stop before
each art work and consider everything that goes
into making that art work.. the colors, lines,
imagination, the brushstrokes, ideas, and the
story of each work When you stand back and look
at the art works, please check to see that you
are not blocking someones view.

How loudly may I talk in the Art Show or Museum?

In an Art Show or Museum you should lower your
speaking voice. This shows respect for all who
are visiting the show. Sometimes the guide
(called the docent in the museum) will need
to speak to the group and all visitors must
demonstrate attentive listening skills.

May I touch the art work in the Art Show or
Museum?

When viewing art work of any kind it is never
acceptable to stand too closely or touch the art
work. You should stand at least 18 away. If
you touch the artwork the oils from your hands
may after time damage it. Some people have been
asked to leave the museum or Art Show if they
do so. By not touching, this demonstrates
care and respect for others artwork.

Is it OK for professional artists and student
artists to copy work of other artists?

Notice the works in an art show or museum. None
are the same. All artists strive to create
original works. Plagiarism is not acceptable in
art just as it Is not acceptable in other
careers. Great care is given to develop a
personal style or message. When you view The
works in an art show or museum, see if you can
appreciate the Individuality of each artists
style.

Can I chew gum or bring food or drinks into an
art show or museum?

Food, drink or gum is never acceptable because
accidents happen and you could damage priceless
artwork. Before you enter the museum or art
show, please store your coat, backpack or any
other large personal items, and dispose of all
food. Consider visiting the restroom before your
tour begins.

Do Art Students and Professional Artists exhibit
their Personal Best when making artwork?

Making art is hard work. It takes time,
perseverance and persistence to create quality
art work. All artists, whether students or
professionals, strive for their personal best in
their artwork. This shows by the effort that is
dedicated to making the artwork.

If I dont like an artwork, how do I speak
respectfully about it?

The art work of others should be respected, even
if it is not your own personal preference. If
you do not care for the art work of an artist,
you should limit your comments to the Elements
and Principles of Art. Inappropriate comments
are not acceptable.

When I visit the art show or museum, is it
important for me to stay with my guide or
docent?

When being led by a guide or docent through an
art show, or a museum, be sure to stay close and
practice attentive listening. The guide
will explain the history, media and symbolism in
the art work. She or he may point out facts and
interesting stories about the art work. Your
questions for the Guide should be directed to the
artwork at hand. Dont interrupt the guide
because she or he will give you an opportunity
for questions. Please make your questions relate
to the topic the guide is discussing.

How should I exit the art show or museum?

When leaving the art show or museum please take
the time to quietly and sincerely thank your
host. A thank you note sent when you return to
your classroom would be nice.

Please use these pointers when you visit an art
show in your school or a museum. Its always a
good idea to find one art work that you think is
your favorite one that you would love to have
hanging in your home. Which one would it be?
