  • Prior approval of Patron required
  • Advertised in a local newspaper
  • Advertisement must include
  • Name and address of school
  • Date of commencement of post
  • State if post is full or part-time, and if part
    time, number of hours
  • General description of duties
  • Latest date for receipt of applications
  • Specify if CV must be submitted with application
  • Specify that references or referees contact
    details are required

Selection Board
  • Chairperson of Board of Management
  • Principal
  • One other person nominated by Board of Management

Selection Board
  • Establish criteria
  • Draw up agreed questions for interview
  • Meet to select candidates for interview
  • Minimum of three candidates must be called for
    interview if more than three apply
  • If less than three apply, ALL candidates must be
    interviewed

Interviews
  • Keep to agreed criteria in assessing candidates
  • Ask same questions of each candidate
  • Be aware of provisions of Employment Equality Act
    1998
  • Ensure no discriminatory questions are asked

Appointment
  • Selection Board give report to Board of
    Management, recommending candidate for
    appointment, pending vetting outcome
  • Board of Management meets and appoints nominated
    candidate, unless it has good and sufficient
    reason not to do so
  • Appointment is made conditional on satisfactory
    Garda Vetting
  • Board of Management keeps list of candidates
    deemed suitable for appointment, effective for
    one year only

Vetting
  • Obtain a Certificate of Medical Fitness to
    undertake duties of post (sample in Circular SNA
    03/03, App B)
  • Before notifying appointment to candidate,
    references MUST be checked
  • Garda Vetting must be obtained

Final Appointment
  • Selection Board meet to consider Garda Vetting
    Letter
  • Selection Board confirm recommendation to Board
    of Management
  • Board of Management confirm appointment
  • Formal offer of position to successful candidate
  • Letter to other candidates notifying them that
    position has now been filled
