    career programsprograms representing the 6
    different career fields.

3
Goals of Health Sciences Program
  • Students will gain interest to pursue a career in
    health science technology.
  • Students will continue workforce development
(college, training, etc.) beyond high school by

    certification at STEP.

4
Goals of Health Sciences Program
  • Through Program of Study, students will enroll in
relevant coursework in high school and in two- or

sequence of coursework will be communicated to
students, their parents, educators, and community
    partners.
  • Instruction will focus on applied academics,
particularly math, reading, and science skills,
    through real world, career-relevant activities.
  • Students will receive academic support, career/

Health Sciences Programat STEP
  • College credit is articulated with our 2-year
    college partners, Anoka Technical College
Anoka-Ramsey Community College. We also broker
    with other 2-year colleges.
  • Students have the opportunity to join CTE student
    organizations, HOSA or Skills USA.
  • Programs have strong advisory committees and
    committed community partners.

9
Health Sciences Programat STEP
  • About 1/3 of total student population at STEP is
enrolled in a health science program this 2008-09
school year. 6 instructors/300 students per
    semester/600 students per year.
  • About 90 of our students are earning college
    credit in our programs.
  • Reports show that many of our students are using
their college credit earned in high school to
    enroll in college.

10
Challenges for Health Sciences Program
  • Recruiting/ hiring/ training qualified staff is a
challenge. We have experienced a high turnover
in qualified staff (i.e. RNs with long term care
    experience).
  • Our home high schools are facing declining
enrollment. This means fewer students/ less
elective classes/ more competition for students.
  • As a district, we are facing funding decreases
due to declining enrollment and cuts in state
    funding.

11
Future Steps in Health Sciences Program
  • Student learning is our goal through effective
    curriculum writingdeveloping program/ course
    understandings, common assessments, and effective
    instruction.
  • We will continue to develop and deliver effective
    applied academics instruction (i.e. math,
reading, and science) in our health sciences
    courses.

12
Future Steps in Health Sciences Program
  • We will continue to focus on student transitions
from high school to college programsAccuplacer
    testing, application and admission, financial
    assistance.
  • We plan to explore the possibilities of
implementing the new Project Lead the Way
    Biosciences program in our courses.
