Title: GenreForm Headings for Moving Images

1
Genre/Form Headings for Moving Images
  • Janis L. Young
  • for
  • LC CPSO

2
Agenda
  • General objectives of the genre/form heading
    projects
  • Background for the moving image project
  • Form of headings
  • Application of headings
  • Timeline

3
Objective 1
  • To assist in retrieval by providing access points
for the forms and genres of expressions, in
addition to headings describing subject content

4
Objective 2
  • To create a system of authority records that
  • Permits future development and maintenance by LC
and eventually by other libraries, patterned
after the routines established for LCSH as a
    whole
  • Supports automatic validation of headings
    assigned to bibliographic records

5
Objective 3
  • To determine the issues that will arise in the
creation and use of such thesauri, in order to
determine whether to expand the project beyond
moving images, recorded sound, and musical
    compositions

6
Rationale for project order
  • The moving images project is the first to go into
    production
  • LCs Motion Picture/Broadcasting/Recorded Sound
Division (MBRS) approached CPSO in 2003
  • MBRS wants a system that can be maintained MIGFG
    has no editorial staff
  • The moving image genre/form terms constitute a
    small, defined subgroup in LCSH
  • This small project will help us identify and
solve problems that we will encounter with larger
    projects

7
Rationale for project order
  • Small, defined?
  • All applicable headings currently coded with MARC
tag 150 are NTs of Motion pictures, Television
    programs, or Video recordings
  • MIGFG includes ca. 150 terms, many of which are
    already represented in LCSH
  • Other reference sources, particularly Moving
Image Materials Genre Terms (MIMs), will be
    consulted as necessary and appropriate

8
Form of headings
  • Goal is to keep the genre/form headings as
closely in synch with topical headings as
    possible
  • To aid collocation
  • To assist users
  • Exceptions may be made as warranted, on a
    case-by-case basis

9
Form of headings
  • If LCSH already includes a heading
  • For cases in which the 150 and 155 headings are
identical, the scope of the two headings will
    also be identical
  • The hierarchical structure will generally be
retained, with the exception of the top terms
  • The goal is to have a 155 for every 150 topical
    genre/form heading in LCSH

10
Form of headings
  • If LCSH does not already include the heading
  • An appropriate genre/form heading will be
constructed based on MIGFG, MIMs, or other
    thesauri

11
Form of headings
  • Problems with individual headings will be
    resolved on a case-by-case basis
  • Examples of solutions
  • The scope of the topical heading may be altered
  • The wording of the genre/form heading may be
altered so that the topical and genre/form
    headings are not in conflict
  • References may be removed from existing headings
and established as headings in their own right

12
Form of headings
  • No geographic subdivision
  • Do not want to duplicate what is found elsewhere
    in the record
  • What would it mean?
  • Setting
  • Place of production
  • Place of distribution

13
Form of headings
  • No provision for language
  • Not strictly part of the genre
  • Language is already provided for in the
    descriptive elements

14
Form of headings
  • Original release of the work
  • Intent is to provide genre/form access to the
expression, not to the manifestation (i.e., the
intellectual or artistic expression of a work,
not its physical carrier (VHS, DVD, electronic,
    etc.))

15
Form of headings
  • Should films and videos be combined into one
    heading?
  • Horror films instead of Horror films and Horror
videos (i.e., broaden the meaning of the word
    film)
  • Use explicit references or scope notes to explain
    the combination?

16
Application
  • Apply as many genre/form headings as desired
  • Apply headings from multiple levels of hierarchy
    if desired
  • Always apply Fiction films or Nonfiction films?

17
Delivery of records
  • Genre/form terms will appear in a separate
section in the front of volume 1 of the printed
    LCSH (the Big Red Books)
  • Genre/form terms will have their own entry point
on the main menu of Classification Web

18
Updating the thesaurus
  • Currently, two LC catalogers are making all of
    the records
  • After a test period, other LC and PCC catalogers
will be invited to make proposal submissions
  • The proposal and approval mechanisms employed for
other LCSH headings will be employed for
    genre/form headings

19
Timeline Completed steps
  • 2003 MBRS approached CPSO
  • 2006 CPSO announced the moving images project
  • May 4, 2007 CDS announced the upcoming planned
    release of records
  • May 11, 2007 CPSO posted a draft of H1913,
Moving Image Genre/Form Headings, for public
    comment
  • June 12, 2007 CPSO posted proposed headings for
    public comment

20
Timeline Future plans
  • June 22-26 CPSO is holding information sessions
    at ALA and gathering comments
  • July-August H1913 will be revised
  • August Some records will appear on (a)
    Tentative Weekly List(s)
  • September 3 or later The first group of records
    will be distributed through CDS
