Overview
  • A) Intro to Data Requirements for a GIS
  • Geospatial Data Defined
  • Attribute Data Defined
  • B) Intro to Starting the Hunt A guide to Mostly
On-line and Mostly Free U.S. Geospatial and
    Attribute Data
  • C) Intro to GeoStor and Assocd Tutorial
  • D) Intro ArcExplorer and Assocd Tutorial
  • E) Intro NWA Imagery Viewer

3
  • A) Intro to Data Requirements for a GIS
  • Geospatial Data
  • Has a locational component
  • Often expressed in terms of Decimal Degrees
    or Degrees/Minutes/Seconds
  • Types are either
  • Vector Data
  • Points, Lines, Polygons
  • Raster/Image Data
  • Pixels/Cells/Raster
  • Attribute Data
  • Alpha or numeric data associated with a
geographic entity such as a county, zip code, or
    census block
  • Can be added to geospatial data through entry in
    geospatial data database tables

4
  • B) Intro to Starting the Hunt A guide to Mostly
On-line and Mostly Free U.S. Geospatial and
    Attribute Data
  • Comprehensive but not exhaustive catalog of
on-line mostly free U.S. geospatial (spatially
    linked) and attribute data
  • Tallies hundreds of maps and Geographical
Infomration Systems data sets held by federal,
    state and local agencies.
  • Includes fields from public health to geology.
Everything from park boundaries to digital
elevation models to crime statistics to Superfund
    site details
  • Examples include regional birth and death
statistics for Alaska, changes in land cover
along the shores of the Great Lakes between 1996
and 2001, and a US EPA map of streams damaged or
threatened by pollution in Washington State

5
  • C) Intro to GeoStor and Associated Tutorial
  • A digital data server containing hundreds of
    layers of exclusively Arkansas-coverage
geospatial data freely downloadable in a variety
of common user specified digital formats
  • Included Themes
  • Cadastral Natural Resources
  • Geopolitical Physical Geography
  • Hydrologic Reference
  • Imagery Socioeconomic
  • Infrastructure
  • Stored data is both of vector and raster type
  • Most of the data has very little or no attribute
    information associated with it
  • Gov Docs has put together a very good on-line
tutorial on how to use GeoStore. URLs to related
    web pages are listed below

  • D) Intro to ArcExplorer and Associated Tutorial
  • A freely available lightweight GIS data viewer
capable of display, query, and data retrieval
    applications
  • With ArcExplorer you can display and query a
variety of data sources including but not limited
    to the following GeoStor formats
  • ESRI Shapefiles used for features of either a
    point, line, or polygon nature
  • GeoTIFF images a common image format used for
aerial photography scans of topographic maps
satellite imagery and related products radar
imagery LIDAR (light detection and ranging) and
other raster, cell, or pixel-based imagery
  • Gov Docs has put together a very good on-line
tutorial on how to use ArcExplorer. URLs to
related web pages are listed below

  • E) Intro to Northwest Arkansas Imagery Viewer
  • Provides access to high resolution aerial imagery
    (12 inch resolution, true-color) from a Spring
2004 acquisition by the Arkansas Highway and
    Transportation Department.
  • With the NWA Imagery Viewer you can display the
above-mentioned aerial imagery along with a
variety of map layers (listed immediately
following), and submit a download request to
GeoStor for the 2004 Aerial Photography.
  • Included Layers
  • Interstate Highways 1926 Fayetteville
    Photography
  • US Highways 1941 Fayetteville Photography
  • State Highways 1966 Fayetteville Photography
  • County Roads 1999 Land Cover
  • Street Labels LIDARnorth
  • Lakes/River Pools LIDARsouth
  • Streams/Rivers NWA 2004 Photography
  • City Boundaries 30m Shaded Relief
  • Counties
  • State Boundary
  • Gov Docs has put together a very good hardcopy
Quick Guide on the usage of the NWA Imagery
Viewer. The URL to related web page is listed
    below.
