Biography of Laura Ingalls Wilder By Kelley Mrs.
Blackmons Class
2
Summary of Laura Ingalls Life
  • Laura Ingalls was born on February 7, 1867. She
moved many places in her life. She had three
sisters and one brother who died at a young age.
She started writing her books when she was 65
years old til she was 73 years old. She got
married to Almanzo Wilder on August 25, 1885. She
died on February 10, 1957 at the age of 90.

3
Family
  • Lauras parents names were Charles and Caroline
Ingalls. Laura had one brother and many sisters.
Lauras oldest sisters name was Mary. She had a
younger sister named Caroline but they called her
Carrie. Next was a baby boy named Charles who
died when he was nine months old. The last child
of the family was Grace. They had a grandmother
    whos name was Margaret.

4
Moving All Around The Country
  • Laura and her family moved to many different
places in her life. She was born in a village
near Pepin, Wisconsin which is now known as the
Big Woods of Wisconsin. When Laura was still
very young her and her family moved to Indian
Territory. At that time, they werent supposed to
be living in that area. After living there her
father moved the family to Grove, Minnesota. They
were living with their relatives. They were also
helping run a hotel in Burr Oak, Iowa. Finally
the family settled in De Smet, Dakota Territory.

5
Career
  • Lauras mother always wanted one of her girls to
be a teacher. It was going to be Mary because she
was the oldest child. After Mary became blind
they knew that it wouldnt be her. Since Laura
was the next oldest daughter her mother said she
could be a teacher. Her mother didnt really give
Laura a choice. When Laura was 15 she started
teaching. She didnt really enjoy it but thought
it was the right thing to do for her family.

6
Her Successful Life
  • Laura later stopped teaching so she could get
married to Almanzo on August 25, 1885. Once they
were married they moved north of De Smet. Laura
had a baby girl named Rose on December 5, 1886.
She loved having a family by her side.

7
Disasters later after marriage
  • One disaster that happened was that Almanzo got
diphtheria and was paralyzed. He finally gained
the use of his legs back but had to walk with a
cane. Another disappointment was that they had a
baby boy, but he died soon after birth in 1889.
Their house and barn also caught on fire. The
last disappointment was that there was such a bad
drought that they were in debt. They were in debt
because they could not produce crops. It was very
    disappointing for the family.

8
