Module Rationale
  • Many organisations have adopted e-commerce in
    response to customer expectations, to remain
    competitive in their business market, and to
    achieve efficiencies over current business
    practices.
  • E-commerce is a major application area of ICT.
  • This module gives students an introduction to the
    types and scope of e-business and the role of the
    underlying hardware and software technologies
    necessary for its effective implementation.

  • Provide an understanding of e-commerce and its
    practical application in a range of business
    settings
  • Present the underlying technologies required for
    e-commerce and the operational considerations in
    their effective use
  • Demonstrate the link between e-commerce systems
    and an organisations internal ICT infrastructure

  • Describe and evaluate real-world examples of
    e-commerce using theoretical concepts and models
    of e-business
  • Define and describe the underlying concepts and
    core practices of e-commerce

  • Course work 1
  • WebCT class test to consolidate underlying
    principles and concepts of e-commerce. (40 of
    coursework mark). This assignment will measure
    the student's achievement of learning outcome (i).

  • Main Course work (No. 2)
  • Students will be asked to describe and analyse
    the online retail environment for one product or
    product group with which they are familiar, e.g.,
    books, computer, software and hardware, music,
    wine, flowers.
  • They will be required to evaluate the current
    online practice with reference to the product or
    product group and to comment on the underlying
    technological infrastructure, supporting the
    operation.
  • Assessment criteria application of appropriate
    e-commerce model to selected scenario
    identification of good and bad practices
    reasonableness of assumptions made about
    underlying technologies accurate use of
    e-commerce concepts and terminology. (60 of
    coursework mark).
  • This assignment will measure the student's
    achievement of learning outcomes (i), (ii) and
    (iii).

  • If you are marked as not present at a lecture or
    practical class, this will affect the maximum

    individual blog
  • On Thursday morning each week, I will check your
    blog and determine a mark for your work that week
  • The work for each week will be released each
    Tuesday
  • At the practical class in week 1, you must attend
    and follow the guidelines to set up a Wordpress
    blog
