  • Required every three years by continuing
    education/experience (60 hours) OR retaking exam
  • Continuing Education/Experience

CONTINUING EDUCATION
  • No limit (all 60 hours could come from Continuing
    Education)
  • Credit is generally hour for hour
  • Do not count meals (or programs during meals),
    exhibit hall, breaks, etc.
  • To the nearest quarter hour (one hour min)
  • Activities MUST BE HR RELATED
  •

CONTINUING EDUCATION
  • Equivalents
  • 1 CEU 10 recert hours
  • 1 CLE 1 recert hour
  • 1 semester course at accredited college 15
    recert hours per credit
  • 1 quarter course at accredited college 12

INSTRUCTION
  • No more than 20 hours can come from Instruction
  • Presentation of an HR-related subject
  • Instructor of HR course, presenter of a
    conference session, etc
  • Credit only for the FIRST time the presentation
    is made
  • 1.5 hours per hour of presentation (to account
    for prep time)
  • NOT for routine presentation to your organization
    (example annual enrollment or orientation)

ON THE JOB
  • No more than 20 hours can come from On The Job
    experiences
  • FIRST time work experience that has added to HR
    knowledge. Examples
  • Research and design of a new benefit plan
  • Research, design and implement a diversity
    program
  • Research, design and implement a new performance
    management system
  • Research and implement a new HRIS system

RESEARCH PUBLICATION
  • No more than 20 hours can come from Research and
    Publication
  • Primary research on an HR-related topic and
    writing and publishing in a scholarly journal.
  • Research must be conducted outside the workplace
    (not as part of your job)
  • Articles solely written by the certified
    professional earns maximum hours.
  • Co-authored or edited works earn 10 hours.

LEADERSHIP
  • No more than 10 hours can come from Leadership
    experiences
  • Must be external to the workplace and have
    application to the HR body of knowledge.
  • Using ones HR expertise to further a volunteer
    organizations mission

  • Examples
  • Board positions 5 hours per year, 10 hours max
    per recert cycle
  • Chairing a committee or conference 5 hours
  • Capitol Hill visit or testifying before
    Congress or state legislators 1 hour
  • Mentoring 5 hours
  • Serving on review board for magazine/publishing
    1 hour

PROFESSIONAL MEMBERSHIP
  • No more than 10 hours can come from Professional
    Membership
  • Membership in Local Chapter does not count.
  • Natl SHRM membership 3 hours/yr
  • Other National Association memberships 2
    hours/yr (ASTD, World At Work, etc)
  • After 2006 there is no requirement that you be a
    national SHRM member in order to use these hours

STRATEGIC MANAGEMENT
  • If you are SPHR (certification expires 2006 or
    later), 15 of your hours MUST tie to the HR body
    of knowledge strategic management section of the
    content outline
  • The processes and activities used to formulate
    HR objectives, practices and policies to meet the
    short- and long-range organizational needs and
    opportunities, to guide and lead the change
    process and to evaluate HRs contribution to
    organizational effectiveness.

  • Trends in the workplace seminars
  • First-time participation in organizational
    strategic planning process
  • Learning about organizational culture and its
    affect on HR policies and practices
  • Participation in leadership training
  • Development of an organization code of ethics

  • You may retake the exam

Approved for Credit/Approved Provider Program
  • Approved for Credit Program Hosts of HR-related
    continuing education activities can submit
    HR-related education activities for pre-approval
    toward recertification credit.
  • Approved Provider Program Providers of multiple
    HR-related continuing education activities are
    approved for 3 years.
  • Recertification credit is awarded on an
    hour-for-hour basis for time spent in the
    educational activity.

Recertification
  • Required every three years (36 months)
  • HRCI provides ID and password for website
  • Log on to track your recertification credits via
    www.hrci.org/hrcicertonline
  • Submit your information as soon as you obtain the
    required recertification credits
  • Keep paper records until notified by HRCI

COSTS
  • 100 to recertify
  • 1-6 months after expiration additional 25
  • 6-12 months after expiration additional 50
  • Credit hours must be obtained by expiration date.
