Phase 1 1930s Second World War
  • Sir Halford John Mackinder,
  • Founder of Geopolitics,
  • Geography and Heartland
  • Theory
  • Author of Democratic Ideals and Reality (1919)
  • Guido G. Preparata, Professor
  • Political Economy at University of
  • Washington

3
The Rise of the Nazis
  • US and Britain worried about
  • rise of Germany and Russia, and
  • their control of Eurasia
  • Bank of England engineered
  • economic collapse of Weimer
  • Bank of England and Anglo-
  • American corporations financed
  • Hitler and the Nazis
  • Both Germany and Russia
  • were devastated by ensuing war

4
Phase 2 Cold War 1945-1990
  • Secret Council on Foreign Relations
  • documents show that US wanted to
  • control Eurasia after WW2
  • Declassified British Foreign Office
  • files prove that West knew there was
  • no Soviet threat
  • Soviet threat was exaggerated
  • deliberately to justify new wars
  • Real threat, according to the secret
  • files, was the problem of nationalism,
  • i.e. independence, self-determination,
  • real democracy, especially in regions
  • rich in strategic resources

5
Our Terrorism in Europe
  • There may be times when Host Country
  • Governments show passivity or indecision US
  • army intelligence must have the means of
  • launching special operations which will
  • convince Host Country Governments and
  • public opinion of the reality of the insurgent
  • danger. To reach this aim US army intelligence
  • should seek to penetrate the insurgency with
  • the task of forming special action groups among
  • the most radical elements of the insurgency
  • In case it has not been possible to successfully
  • infiltrate such agents into the leadership of
  • the rebels it can be useful to instrumentalise
  • extreme leftist organizations for ones own
  • ends in order to achieve the above described
  • targets.
  • (Field Manual 30-31, US Defense Intelligence
    Agency)
  • Dr. Ganser
  • Department of History
  • Basel University (published
  • by Routledge, London)

6
Phase 3 Afghan Proxy War 1979-1989
  • Al-Qaeda was created with US, British and Western
    support
  • The name al-Qaeda
  • was not invented by bin
  • Laden, but by CIA
  • Al-Qaeda is shorthand
  • for al-Qaeda maloomat
  • which means database

7
Post-Cold War Western Sponsorship of Al-Qaeda
  • Azerbaijan 1991-1993
  • Bosnia-Herzegovina 1992-1995
  • Afghanistan, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, 1996-2001
  • Kosovo, Macedonia, 1996-2003
  • Also, in Chechnya (Caucasus), Philippines
    (Asia-Pacific), Algeria (North Africa)

8
Sponsorship of al-Qaeda in the Middle East
2005-2008
  • Continuing sponsorship of al-Qaeda through Saudi
    Arabia across Middle East
  • An anti-Iran and anti-Shia strategy
  • Original US plan to re-divide and re-structure
the whole Middle East to secure control of Gulf
oil supplies, including forced partitioning of
    Iraq

9
The Iraq Plan
  • The central and largest part of Iraq that is
populated by the Sunni Arabs would be joined with
Jordan, and would include Baghdad, which would no
    longer be the capital.
  • The Kurdish region of northern and northwestern
Iraq, including Mosul and the vast Kirkuk
oilfields, would become its own autonomous state.
  • The Shia Region in southwestern Iraq, including
Basra, would make up the third state, or more
likely it would be joined with Kuwait.
  • shift the balance of forces in the region
heavily in the US favor. After eliminating Iraq
as a sovereign state, there would be no fear that
one day an anti-American government would come to
power in Baghdad, as the capital would be in
Amman Jordan. Current and potential US
geopolitical foes Iran, Saudi Arabia and Syria
would be isolated from each other...
  • Equally important, Washington would be able to
justify its long-term and heavy military presence
in the region as necessary for the defense of a
young new state asking for US protection -- and
to secure the stability of oil markets and
supplies. That in turn would help the United
States gain direct control of Iraqi oil and
replace Saudi oil in case of conflict with
    Riyadh.

Chief of Staff of Intelligence, on a better
Middle East
12
Iraq Divide-and-Rule
  • US fights back against 'rule by clerics
  • By Syed Saleem Shahzad (Asia Times, 15
  • Feb 2005)
  • To head off this threat of a Shi'ite
    clergy-driven religious movement, the
  • US has, according to Asia Times Online
    investigations, resolved to arm
  • small militias backed by US troops and entrenched
    in the population to
  • "nip the evil in the bud". .. The US-armed and
supported militias in the south will comprise
  • former members of the Ba'ath Party
  • BUT
  • Al Qaeda terrorists who have infiltrated Iraq
from Saudi Arabia and other Arab countries have
formed an alliance with former intelligence
agents of Saddam Hussein (Sunday Times, 10
    August 2003)

13
US Joint Special Operations University Report,
November 2005
  • US Army document by Professor Thomas Henriken,
former US Army Science Board Advisor, confirms
  • The post-invasion stage in Iraq is an
  • interesting case study of fanning discontent
  • among enemies, leading to red-against-red
  • firefights (this color-coding derives from US
  • training exercises, in which red designates enemy
  • Combatants) US elite forces in Iraq turned
  • to fostering infighting among their Iraqi
  • adversaries on the tactical and operational
  • level

14
The Redirection (2006-2007)
  • we are interested in recreating what is
  • happening in Iraq in Lebanon, that is Sunni
  • versus Shia... we have been pumping money, a
  • great deal of money, without congressional
  • authority, without any congressional oversight,
  • Prince Bandar of Saudi Arabia is putting up
  • some of this money, for covert operations in
  • many areas of the Middle East where we want to
    stop the
  • Shiite spread or the Shiite influence... And a
lot of this money has gotten
  • into the hands - among other places, in Lebanon,
into the hands of three - at
  • least three jihadist groups... These are people
connected to al Qaeda ... We
  • are supporting groups indirectly that are
    involved with the same people
  • that did 9/11.

15
Bush administration bolstering al-Qaeda (March
2007)
  • A by-product of these activities has been the
bolstering of Sunni extremist groups that espouse
a militant vision of Islam and are hostile to
America and sympathetic to Al Qaeda.
  • ... The clandestine operations have been kept
secret, in some cases, by leaving the execution
or the funding to the Saudis,... the U.S.
government consultant told me, Bandar and other
Saudis have assured the White House that they
will keep a very close eye on the religious
fundamentalists. Their message to us was Weve
created this movement, and we can control it.
Its not that we dont want the Salafis to throw
bombs its who they throw them atHezbollah,
Moqtada al-Sadr, Iran, and at the Syrians, if
they continue to work with Hezbollah and Iran.

16
February 2008 300 million for pro-terror
anti-Iran covert actions
  • Who benefits?
  • Mujahideen-e-Khalq (on State Department and EU
    list of terror groups)
  • Jundullah (al-Qaeda affiliated group in
    Baluchistan), linked to Lashkar-e-Toiba and
Jamaat-ud-Dawa, and implicated in August 2006
    transatlantic liquid bomb plot
  • Kurdish nationalists in Iran
  • Ahwaz Arabs in southwest Iran
  • These groups have already carried out bomb
attacks in civilian areas in Iran killing dozens
    and injuring hundreds.
  • Andrew Cockburn,
  • expert on national
  • security issues for
  • New York Times,
  • Vanity Fair, National
  • Geographic, New
  • Yorker, etc.
