The Earliest Gospel
  • virtually certain that it was used by Matthew and

    direct and often quite vivid
  • Like an extension of Peters sermon in Acts
    1036ff

4
Authorship
  • Attributed from early date to John Mark (Acts
1212 1537), associate of Paul and disciple of
Peter, whose teachings the Gospel may reflect
  • No compelling reason to doubt Papias
  • He wrote down accurately, but not in order, the
    things said by Peter

  • "Sit here while I pray.
  • He began to be distressed and agitated
  • "Abba, Father, remove this cup ..

Trial before Pilate 151ff
  • Jesus silent Pilate was amazed
  • The man called Barabbas
  • King of the Jews?" "Crucify him!
  • after flogging Jesus, he handed him over to be
    crucified.

in a tomb hewn out of the rock.
  • Rolled a stone against the door
  • Mary Magdalene and Mary J saw where

20
Why is Marks a/c so dark ?
  • His readers were faced with stark option
  • Probably in aftermath of Neros purge
  • Already Jesus had foretold how the cross would
    lead to resurrection
  • He calls people to trust in him, who could raise
from the dead, a faith that overcomes unbelief
    (535-36)

21
Resurrection Announced 161ff
  • 161-8 is very sparse. Intentionally?
  • Maybe Mk intended it that way
  • Maybe last page of the original was lost
  • 169-22 is clearly added on later Now after he
rose early on the first day of the week, he
    appeared first to.
