Background
  • GCOS-IP, with its 131 suggested actions, has been
    adopted by UNFCCC and GEO and nations have been
    called to implement it.
  • GCOS partnership with UNFCCC is strong and
    central to future of GCOS
  • New reporting guidelines for progress against
    GCOS-IP have been forwarded to UNFCCC for adoption

Upcoming Activities -1
  • Adequacy/Implementation Review. UNFCCC has
    called for report in 2009.
  • Decision still to be taken about how to report
    most effectively. A 3rd Adequacy Report?
    Updated requirements/actions for 2AR? Just
    report on national actions?
  • Learning from 4th IPCC Assessment Report.
    Workshop in Sydney, Oct.07

Upcoming Activities - 2
  • Continuing work on Satellite requirements for
    climate products (GCOS-107). Need to continue
    interactions with CEOS, CGMS, WMO Satellite
    Program, IGOS-P.
  • SBSTA-24 calls for GCOS to lead in various
    activities on data and observations components of
    their 5-year plan on impacts.

Upcoming Activities - 3
  • GCOS regional workshops have been done around the
    world over the past decade. An action plan for
    Africa was developed last year in support of the
    UN Millenium Development Goals. If resources are
    available, additional RWs will be held.
  • GRUAN (global reference upper air network) of
    30-40 stations is being proposed as enhancement
    of GUAN.

Upcoming Actions - 4
  • Continuing interactions w. GEO. GCOS IP is the
    core observing part of the GEO 10-year work plan.
